# How to Use xCloud AI Assistant

> Learn how to use xCloud AI Assistant to check servers and sites, set Read & Write access and approve changes from your xCloud dashboard.

**[xCloud AI Assistant](/xcloud-ai-assistant/)** is a built-in chat panel in your **[xCloud](/)** dashboard that works as an AI assistant for server management, so you can manage servers and sites in plain language. You can ask it to check a site, read server logs or explain your billing without opening each page yourself. Once you allow it, xCloud AI Assistant can also restart services, purge caches and update WordPress for you after you approve each change. This guide shows you how to use xCloud AI Assistant step by step, from opening the panel to managing its access.

## What Can xCloud AI Assistant Do?

xCloud AI Assistant reads broadly and changes things only when you approve them. It can list your servers and sites, show resource usage and usage history, read server and site logs, check SSL status, show PageSpeed results and list available WordPress updates. It also answers billing questions such as your unpaid invoices or last month's charges.

xCloud AI Assistant is more than a chatbot. It does not just answer questions; it acts on your servers and sites within the access you allow. Keep it at Read level to look things up, or switch it to Read & Write so it can make changes for you, with every change waiting for your approval before it runs.

## How to Use xCloud AI Assistant in Your Dashboard

xCloud AI Assistant is available to every team. It is still labelled **Beta** while we keep improving it. If you do not see the **AI Assistant** icon in your dashboard header, reload the dashboard. If it is still missing, contact **[xCloud support](/docs/access-built-in-support-portal-in-xcloud/)**.

The assistant always works within your own team permissions. It can never do anything your role does not allow. See **[team roles and permissions in xCloud](/docs/team-roles-permissions-in-xcloud/)** for what each role can do.

### Step 1: Open xCloud AI Assistant

Log in to your xCloud dashboard and click the **AI Assistant** icon in the top header, next to the search bar, to open the AI Assistant panel on the right side of the screen. To hide the panel at any time, click the same icon again or click the **Close** icon at the top of the panel.

### Step 2: Choose a Suggested Prompt or Type Your Request

The welcome screen shows up to four suggested prompts based on the page you are on. On a site page you can click **Diagnose this site**, **Check WordPress updates** or **Diagnose this server** to start a guided check. You can also type your own request in the message box at the bottom of the panel, such as "Show me my servers" or "How much did my team pay last month?", and then click the **Send** button. When your request needs a specific server or site, the assistant shows you a list to choose from before it continues.

The guided prompts start with read-only checks of status, services, resource usage and logs. They never restart a service, reboot a server or change a configuration without asking you first.

### Step 3: Allow the Assistant Access Key

The first time xCloud AI Assistant needs to look up data or act on your behalf, it asks to create its own access key under your account. This key is limited to what you can already do and expires after 7 days by default. Click **Create key** to allow it. If you prefer to handle the task yourself, click **Not now** and continue from the dashboard.

Once you allow the key, the assistant renews it automatically when it expires. You will not need to approve it again unless you revoke it.

### Step 4: Switch xCloud Assistant Access to Read & Write

A new access key starts at Read level, which lets the assistant look things up without changing anything. To let it make changes, click your profile picture in the top right corner and select **My Profile**.

![Opening My Profile from the profile menu in the xCloud dashboard](/_landing/docs/how-to-use-xcloud-ai-assistant-image-5.png)

In the left sidebar, go to **Developers** and open **API Tokens**. On the **Assistant Access** card, click **Read & Write**. If you have not created the key from the chat yet, click **Grant Read Access** on the same card first.

In the confirmation window, click **Allow Read & Write** to apply the new access level. Every write action still needs your approval before it runs.

### Step 5: Approve Changes With the Confirmation Card

Ask the assistant to make a change, for example "Restart nginx on demo-server". Before anything runs, the assistant shows an **Action required** card with the details of the change. Review the server, service or site listed on the card and click **Confirm** to run it. Click **Cancel** if you want to stop. For actions that cannot be undone, the card shows a clear warning before you confirm.

If the assistant needs one more permission that you already hold, it shows a separate card where you can click **Allow** or **Not now**. It never asks for a permission your role does not have.

### Step 6: Manage Your Conversations

Click the **New chat** icon to start a fresh conversation for a new task. Click the **Chat history** icon to search, reopen or delete past conversations. To rename the open conversation, click the **Rename chat** icon next to its tab. To work in full screen with a conversation list, click the **Expand** icon at the top of the panel.

Your conversations are private to you. **Chat history** only shows the conversations you started, even when you share a team. Still, never paste passwords or other secrets into a message. When the assistant needs a sensitive value, it shows a hidden input that keeps your reply private.

## How to Revoke xCloud AI Assistant Access

You can withdraw the assistant's access at any time. Go to **My Profile**, open **API Tokens** and click **Revoke Access** on the **Assistant Access** card. Then click **Yes, revoke it** to confirm. The assistant loses its access key and asks again before it can act on your behalf.

To keep the key but block all changes, click **Read** on the same card instead. The assistant can still look things up while every write action stays blocked.

## xCloud AI Assistant Usage Limits and Helpful Tips

- Each message can be up to 1,000 characters long.
- The assistant works from roughly the last 20 messages of a conversation. Start a new chat when you switch to a different task.
- Your team may also have a daily message limit. When your team reaches it, the assistant lets you know and the limit resets the next day. Until then you can keep managing your servers and sites directly from the dashboard.
- If the assistant replies that its access is set to Read only, switch it to Read & Write as shown in **[Step 4](#step-4-switch-xcloud-assistant-access-to-read--write)**.
- If it says its access key is gone, ask again and click **Create key** when prompted.
- If you see a message that xCloud AI Assistant is disabled or not enabled for your team, contact **[xCloud support](/docs/access-built-in-support-portal-in-xcloud/)**.
