How to Create a Telegram Bot and Connect It With Hermes on xCloud

Hermes Agent runs on your xCloud server, but you do not always have the dashboard open when you need it. Connecting Hermes to Telegram gives you a faster way in. You can send prompts, get replies, and run Hermes from your phone wherever you are, without logging into the server.

Follow this guide to create a Telegram bot token with BotFather and connect it to Hermes Agent during deployment on xCloud. You will create the bot, copy the bot token, find your Telegram user ID, and enter both values in the Hermes Agent deployment flow. Most of the setup takes place while you create or configure the Hermes server in xCloud.

Telegram bot token setup for Hermes Agent on xCloud

Add the Telegram bot token while deploying Hermes Agent on xCloud.

Prerequisites #

  • An active xCloud account.
  • Access to the Hermes Agent deployment flow in xCloud.
  • A Telegram account.
  • The Telegram app is installed on your phone or desktop.

Step 1: Open BotFather in Telegram #

Open Telegram and search for @BotFather. BotFather is Telegramโ€™s official bot for creating and managing bots. You can also review Telegramโ€™s official BotFather information in the Telegram BotFatherย documentation.

  1. Open Telegram.
  2. Search for @BotFather.
  3. Open the verified BotFather chat.
  4. Click Start if you have not used BotFather before.

Step 2: Create a new Telegram bot #

In the BotFather chat, send the following command:

/newbot

BotFather will ask for two values:

  • Bot name: This is the display name users see in Telegram. Example: xCloud Hermes Assistant.
  • Bot username: This must be unique and must end with bot. Example: xcloud_hermes_assistant_bot.

If the username is already taken, choose a different username and send it again. When Telegram accepts the username, BotFather creates the bot and returns a token.

Send /newbot in BotFather, then enter the bot display name and bot username.

Step 3: Copy the Telegram bot token #

After the bot is created, BotFather shows a Telegram bot token. The token usually looks similar to this example:

1234567890:AAExampleTokenValueForYourTelegramBot

Copy the full token and keep it private. Anyone with this token may be able to control your Telegram bot. Do not share it publicly, do not add it to screenshots, and do not paste it into public support threads.

Copy the Telegram bot token from BotFather and keep it secure.

Step 4: Find your Telegram user ID #

Hermes can restrict Telegram access to allowed users. If the xCloud setup form asks for a Telegram user ID, add the Telegram numeric ID for the person who should be allowed to control Hermes.

  1. Open Telegram.
  2. Search for @userinfobot or another trusted Telegram user ID bot.
  3. Start the bot.
  4. Copy your numeric Telegram user ID.

If multiple team members need access, collect each personโ€™s Telegram user ID and add them where the Hermes setup form supports multiple IDs.

Send /start to the bot to confirm the Telegram user ID or pairing details.

Step 5: Add the Telegram bot token while setting up Hermes on xCloud #

Go back to xCloud and continue the Hermes deployment flow. During setup, choose Agentic, select Hermes Agent, and open the optional Telegram messaging section.

  1. Open your xCloud dashboard.
  2. Start the agent deployment flow.
  3. Select Agentic.
  4. Select Hermes Agent.
  5. Go to the optional Telegram or messaging section.
  6. Paste the Telegram Bot Token you copied from BotFather.
  7. Add your Telegram User ID if the field is available or required.

Make sure there are no extra spaces before or after the token. A small typo in the token can prevent Hermes from connecting to Telegram.

Step 6: Complete the Hermes deployment #

After adding the Telegram bot token, continue the remaining Hermes setup steps in xCloud. Review the selected server, plan, domain, and required environment values. Then click Next and click Create to start the deployment.

xCloud will provision the server and install Hermes Agent. Wait until the setup finishes before testing Telegram. If the deployment is still running, Telegram may not reply yet.

Step 7: Start and test the Telegram bot #

After the Hermes deployment is complete, open your new Telegram bot and send:

/start

Then send a short test message, such as:

Hello Hermes

If the connection is working, Hermes should respond in Telegram. You can now use Telegram as a messaging channel for your Hermes Agent.

Send /start and a short test message to confirm the Hermes Telegram connection is working.

And that’s it this is how you can create a Telegram Bot and connect It with Hermes on xCloud. If you want the full deployment walkthrough to deploy your AI Agent with Hermes Agent, read this documentation.

Manage the Telegram connection after deployment #

The setup-time Telegram fields are the recommended way to connect Hermes during deployment. After Hermes is deployed, you can manage messaging configuration from the Hermes dashboard or available channel settings if your deployment exposes them.

Use the post-deployment settings only for maintenance tasks such as replacing a bot token, adjusting allowed Telegram users, or reconnecting the channel after changing the bot in Telegram.

Troubleshooting #

BotFather says the username is unavailable #

Choose a different bot username. Telegram bot usernames must be unique and must end with bot.

Hermes does not reply in Telegram #

  • Confirm the Hermes deployment has finished.
  • Send /start to the bot first.
  • Check that the Telegram bot token was copied correctly.
  • Confirm your Telegram user ID is allowed if access restrictions are enabled.
  • Restart or reconnect the Telegram channel from the Hermes settings if available.

The Telegram bot token was exposed #

If the token was shared publicly or added to a screenshot, open @BotFather, revoke the old token, generate a new token, and update the Hermes Telegram configuration in xCloud.

FAQ #

Do I need a Telegram bot to use Hermes on xCloud? #

No. Hermes can still run without Telegram if you use another supported interface. You only need a Telegram bot token if you want to control Hermes from Telegram.

Can I add the Telegram bot token after Hermes is deployed? #

Yes, where post-deployment channel settings are available. However, adding the Telegram bot token during setup is the recommended flow because Hermes can be configured with Telegram from the start.

Can more than one Telegram user access the same Hermes bot? #

Yes, if your Hermes setup supports multiple allowed Telegram user IDs. Add each trusted userโ€™s Telegram ID and avoid sharing the bot token itself.
