What is Activepieces?
Activepieces is an open-source automation platform. You build flows on a visual canvas that connect apps, APIs, webhooks, data and AI steps — routing form submissions, syncing records between tools, sending approvals, enriching data, or running anything you'd otherwise write a cron job for.
Is Activepieces free and open source?
Activepieces core is MIT-licensed, and this template deploys the Community Edition. Code in the project's enterprise directories is under a separate commercial licence, and the upstream paid plans are their own product — nothing here bundles an Activepieces subscription, enterprise licence, cloud credits or upstream support.
What exactly does the xCloud template deploy?
Four things wired together: the pinned Activepieces 0.86.3 image as the web app, a second copy of it as a dedicated concurrency-1 worker, PostgreSQL with pgvector, and an authenticated append-only Redis. Only the app's port is exposed, and only to localhost, behind xCloud nginx and HTTPS.
Can I run Activepieces with Docker?
Yes — the Activepieces Docker images are what this template runs, pinned to 0.86.3 for both the app and the worker, with PostgreSQL and Redis beside them on a private network. You get the Docker deployment without authoring the four-service Compose file or generating the encryption key and JWT secret yourself.
How does it compare to Zapier or n8n?
It is the open-source Zapier alternative people reach for when per-task pricing stops making sense, and the usual n8n alternative when they want a builder aimed at no-code users with code steps available rather than the reverse. The real difference here is custody: this is self-hosted workflow automation, so the credentials for every tool you connect sit in your own PostgreSQL database rather than a vendor's. Compare connector coverage against the tools you actually use before you switch.
Do I need technical skills?
Not to deploy it, and not to build most flows — the builder is designed for no-code users, with code steps there when you need them. What you don't do is assemble a four-service Compose stack, generate an encryption key and a JWT secret, or configure a reverse proxy.
How much RAM does self-hosted Activepieces need?
The template's enforced minimum is 8 GB RAM, 4 CPU cores and 20 GB of disk, which is why this page starts at the 16 GB plan rather than the 6 GB one — a production-shaped install runs an app, a worker, PostgreSQL and Redis at once. Flow duration, concurrent runs, code steps, file sizes, AI actions and retained run history all push it higher.
Does it need PostgreSQL, Redis or S3?
PostgreSQL and Redis are included and stay private on the internal Docker network — you don't provision them separately. S3 is not required: the template starts with database-backed file storage on purpose, so there's no object-storage prerequisite. Add same-region S3 later if you move sustained production traffic or large files through it.
What do I still configure myself?
The first administrator and your access policy, the connections and credentials for the third-party apps you automate, any SMTP, S3 or AI-provider keys, your flow design and error handling, and your backup and upgrade routine.
How do I back up and update it?
Back up four boundaries together: the PostgreSQL volume, the Redis volume, the cache volume, and the rendered environment — especially AP_ENCRYPTION_KEY, without which saved connections cannot be decrypted. Pause flow execution first so the snapshot is consistent, copy it off-server, and test the restore. Updates are deliberate: a catalogue re-sync affects new installs only, so you back up, read the release notes, update the app and worker images together, and never delete or rename a volume.
Does my work survive a restart?
Yes. QA for this template created an account and platform, published a webhook flow, ran it successfully, then used the real xCloud Restart action and read the same enabled automation back afterwards. Backups are still your recovery plan, not the restart.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
