What is Listmonk?
Listmonk is a free, open-source, self-hosted newsletter and mailing-list manager backed by PostgreSQL. It handles subscriber lists, SQL-based segmentation, campaign templates, analytics, media and a full API — all on a server you control.
Is Listmonk free?
The community software is licensed under AGPL-3.0, so there is no software licence fee. What you pay for is the server it runs on, your domain, your SMTP delivery, and any off-server backup storage you add.
Does this include an SMTP server?
No, and that is deliberate. Listmonk sends through an SMTP service you supply — your own mail server or a provider like Postmark, SES or Sendgrid. You configure the connection under Settings → SMTP, and you own the sending domain, its SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, and its reputation.
Can I deploy Listmonk with Docker?
Yes — that is exactly what this is, minus the work. The OneClick template runs the official Listmonk Docker image with PostgreSQL beside it, on a private network, with health checks, generated database credentials and a localhost-only origin behind xCloud HTTPS. You never write a Compose file.
How do I host Listmonk — what does the setup involve?
Three steps and no terminal: create an xCloud account, fill in the OneClick form with your domain and a first admin username and password, and deploy. Listmonk setup after that happens inside the app — connect SMTP, add your sending domain's SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, then import a list.
What does Listmonk hosting cost?
Listmonk pricing for the software itself is zero — it is AGPL-3.0 open-source email marketing with no licence fee. What you pay is the Cloud VPS it runs on, from $24.99/month, plus your domain and whatever your SMTP provider charges for delivery. There is no per-subscriber or per-email fee from us.
Is Listmonk a good alternative to Mailchimp or Sendgrid's marketing suite?
It is the usual Listmonk alternative story in reverse: teams move to it to stop paying per subscriber and to keep the list on their own infrastructure. It handles lists, segmentation, templates, campaigns and analytics. What it does not do is deliver the mail — hosted suites bundle sending and reputation, and with self-hosted email marketing you bring an SMTP provider and own the sending domain.
Do I need technical skills?
Not for the deployment. There is no Compose file to write, no PostgreSQL to install and no reverse proxy to configure — you fill in a short form and we install and maintain the server for you. Connecting SMTP and deliverability DNS afterwards is a normal email-setup task inside Listmonk and your DNS provider.
How long does deployment take?
About five minutes. You create an account, choose a plan, and a healthy Listmonk login is waiting at your own HTTPS domain with PostgreSQL already wired up behind it.
How much server do I need?
The template's enforced minimum is 1 GB RAM, 1 CPU core and 4 GB of disk, so the 6 GB plan clears it several times over. Plan real capacity around PostgreSQL instead: subscriber count, import size, campaign history and retained analytics are what grow, along with any campaign media you upload.
What data persists?
Two named volumes. One holds PostgreSQL — your users, subscribers, lists, settings, templates, campaigns and analytics. The second holds uploaded campaign media, when you point Settings → Media at /listmonk/uploads. QA confirmed a synthetic private list was still there after a real xCloud Restart.
How do I back up and update it?
Back up both boundaries together: a PostgreSQL-native dump plus the uploads volume, copied off-server and test-restored somewhere isolated. A volume snapshot alone is not an application-consistent database backup. Updates are deliberate — a new catalogue version changes future installs, it never silently upgrades a running site, so you back up and read the release notes first.
Is a self-hosted newsletter automatically compliant?
No. Where the server sits does not by itself establish GDPR, CAN-SPAM or any other compliance. Consent, suppression lists, privacy notices, retention, sender identity and applicable law stay yours to get right.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
