AUTOMATED SECURITY UPDATES
Automatic Security Updates for Your Ubuntu Servers
Automatic security updates install Ubuntu's security patches without anyone logging in. xCloud sets them up on every server it manages, can reboot the server at a time you choose when an update needs it, and can also patch PHP, the database and Redis. It is part of every server, on every plan.
- Ubuntu security patches, installed daily
- Reboot only when needed, at your time
- Optional PHP, database and Redis patches
WHY IT MATTERS
Why Automate Server Security Updates?
Nobody has to remember
Patches go in on schedule, even on the server nobody has opened in months.
Kernel and OpenSSL holes
The fixes that matter most come from Ubuntu's security repository.
Reboots without surprises
A kernel update needs a reboot. You choose when that happens.
WHAT YOU GET
What Does xCloud Update Automatically?
Ubuntu security updates
Kernel, OpenSSL, Nginx and system packages from Ubuntu's security repository.
Automatic Reboot
Reboots at your Reboot Time, in the server's timezone, only if an update needs it.
PHP, database and Redis
Turn on patch releases for PHP, MySQL 8.4, MariaDB 11.8 and Redis, within the same version.
Reboot notices
See a reboot required notice and get an email, or snooze it.
HOW IT WORKS
How Do You Set Up Automatic Reboots in xCloud?
Open Security Update
Open the server, go to Security, then Security Update.
Pick a reboot time
Turn on Automatic Reboot and choose a quiet Reboot Time.
Add PHP and database patches
Turn on Include PHP, database and Redis updates and pick an Update Time.
LIMITS AND PLANS
What Does It Not Do?
No Ubuntu Pro
xCloud does not attach servers to Ubuntu Pro or turn on ESM Apps.
No version jumps
PHP and database patches stay on the series you run, for example 8.3 stays 8.3.
Old Ubuntu releases
A release past standard support gets fewer fixes. Upgrade the server to a current LTS.
Every plan
Security updates are set up on every server xCloud provisions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What people ask about Automated Security Updates on xCloud.
How do automatic security updates work on Ubuntu?
Ubuntu's unattended-upgrades package checks for updates every day and installs the ones from the security repository. xCloud installs and sets it up on every server it provisions.
Will my server reboot every day?
No. With Automatic Reboot on, the server reboots at the time you picked only when Ubuntu marks a reboot as required, usually after a kernel update.
Do security updates include PHP?
Not by default, because PHP comes from its own repository. Turn on Include PHP, database and Redis updates on the Security Update page, or install a PHP patch from Management, then Manage PHP.
Does xCloud enable Ubuntu Pro or ESM?
No. Updates come from the repositories already enabled on your server. Some packages in Ubuntu's universe repository only get fixes through Ubuntu Pro.
