What is DeepTutor?

DeepTutor is an Apache-2.0 learning workspace that upstream describes as agent-native: chat, quiz generation, research, visualisation, problem solving and mastery practice all run on one agent loop. Knowledge bases, notebooks, a question bank and memory carry across those modes. Self-hosted DeepTutor is the counterpart to hosted study tools such as NotebookLM and ChatGPT study mode, and it works with the model provider you configure.

On xCloud the template runs the official DeepTutor 1.5.7 image as one container: a Next.js web interface proxied by xCloud nginx and a FastAPI backend that is never published. Built-in authentication is on, one administrator is created at install, and runtime settings, provider keys, knowledge bases, notebooks and memory sit on the deeptutor_data volume. No language model is included; you bring the provider.

Is DeepTutor free?

Yes. DeepTutor is released under the Apache-2.0 licence, so the software has no licence fee. You pay for the Cloud VPS it runs on, plus whatever your chosen model provider charges for API usage, because no language model is included in the template.

How do I self-host DeepTutor with Docker?

The template handles it. It runs the official DeepTutor 1.5.7 image under Docker Compose, mounts the deeptutor_data volume, enables authentication and adds your domain and HTTPS. DeepTutor Docker hosting here means you never write the Compose file or configure the proxy yourself.

Does DeepTutor need an OpenAI API key?

It needs a model provider you control, not specifically OpenAI. After sign-in, open Settings → Models, add a provider's base URL, key and model name, and test it before saving. The key is entered in DeepTutor itself and is not an xCloud install field.

Which AI providers does DeepTutor support?

Upstream lists many LLM and embedding providers, including OpenAI-compatible endpoints and Anthropic, and you pick one in Settings → Models. This template includes no local model, so choose a remote provider or an endpoint you run elsewhere. Check the upstream docs for the provider you plan to use.

Can DeepTutor run with Ollama?

Upstream documents Ollama as a provider, using an OpenAI-compatible base URL. The template does not include a local LLM, so Ollama would need to run elsewhere and be reachable from your server. Large local models also need far more memory than the 2048 MB the manifest asks for.

Where does DeepTutor store my documents?

On the deeptutor_data volume mounted at /app/data. It holds settings, authentication state, provider credentials, knowledge bases, notebooks, memory and logs. Treat any backup of it as secret-bearing, stop DeepTutor before a copy, and test the restore in an isolated installation.

How do I update DeepTutor?

There is no automatic update. The template pins DeepTutor 1.5.7 by digest and a catalog re-sync only affects new installs. Back up deeptutor_data, read the upstream release notes, change the image version, recreate the container with the same volume, then check login and model settings.

Is it safe to enable code execution in DeepTutor?

This template keeps it off. DeepTutor's subprocess setting is forced disabled on every container start and the optional sandbox runner is left out. Review any MCP service, CLI app or partner grant before turning it on for a user, since each widens what the tutor can reach.

Is there a DeepTutor cloud account I need?

No. Nothing here depends on a DeepTutor cloud login: the app runs on your own Cloud VPS, you sign in with the administrator account created at install, and the only outside service involved is the model provider you choose to connect.

What are the server requirements?

The manifest asks for 2048 MB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 10 GB of disk. Document parsing, large knowledge bases and several concurrent users can need more. The 6 GB tier covers that floor with room for a small study group.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
