What is AnythingLLM?

AnythingLLM is the all-in-one AI application for building a private, fully featured ChatGPT-style workspace. You connect a local or cloud LLM, ingest your documents, chat with them, run AI agents and, in its Docker version, give several users their own access. Run on your own server it is a self-hosted AnythingLLM, the alternative to a hosted assistant such as ChatGPT for your own files, released under the MIT licence.

On xCloud it is one container, mintplexlabs/anythingllm 1.16.2 pinned by digest, with the built-in LanceDB vector database and embedder. The anythingllm_storage volume holds the SQLite database, documents, indexes and settings. No model ships with it: you add your own provider key, and that provider bills the usage. Agent skills and web browsing are optional.

Can I self-host AnythingLLM with Docker?

Yes, and this template is AnythingLLM Docker hosting without the compose file: mintplexlabs/anythingllm 1.16.2 pinned by digest, one container with the anythingllm_storage volume and HTTPS. Upstream's README marks multi-user support as a Docker-version feature, so this build covers single-user and multi-user setups.

Does AnythingLLM include an LLM?

No. The template ships no local model. In the setup wizard you choose a provider, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure, Ollama on another host or an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, and enter its key. Anyone who can sign in uses that provider, billed to your account.

How much RAM does AnythingLLM need?

The template minimum is 2 GB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 10 GB of disk, and x86 servers need a CPU with AVX2. Large document collections, the built-in embedder and many users need more. This page sells the 6 GB tier.

How do I set the AnythingLLM password?

Set it at install or let xCloud generate it. It is the AUTH_TOKEN value and is re-applied on every start, so change it in the Environment editor and redeploy; a password changed inside the app reverts on restart. Never change SIG_KEY or SIG_SALT.

Does AnythingLLM support multiple users?

Yes. Turn on Multi-User Mode under Settings, Security and create an admin user to give each person a login. It replaces the single instance password and cannot be switched back, so decide before you enable it.

What is the difference between AnythingLLM Docker and the desktop app?

Upstream offers a desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux as well as the Docker build. Its README marks multi-user support and permissioning, and the embeddable chat widget for your website, as Docker version only. This template is the Docker build.

Is AnythingLLM free?

Yes. AnythingLLM is released under the MIT licence, so running it costs nothing in software fees. What you do pay for is the dedicated Cloud VPS underneath, and separately for whichever LLM provider you connect, which bills its own usage on its own account.

How do I back up AnythingLLM?

Stop the container, then back up the whole anythingllm_storage volume. It holds the SQLite database, uploaded and processed documents, vector indexes, downloaded models and a .env with provider API keys. Nothing runs this backup for you, so schedule it and test a restore.

How do I upgrade AnythingLLM?

Nothing upgrades itself: 1.16.2 is pinned by digest, so an existing install stays on it until you move it. When a newer template version is published, back up the storage volume, read the upstream release notes, then adopt that version; migrations run on start.

Is this an AnythingLLM cloud service?

It is AnythingLLM on a dedicated Cloud VPS under your xCloud login, an AnythingLLM cloud of your own at your domain, separate from upstream's hosted instance. Without a password it would be fully open, so the template always sets one.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
