UNMANAGED VS MANAGED

What Changes When Your VPS Is Managed?

A bare VPS hands you a fresh Ubuntu install and every job after it. Here is who does what.

A bare VPS: you do itManaged VPS on xCloud
Install the web server, PHP and database by hand, then tune them. The server is built with Nginx or OpenLiteSpeed, PHP and MySQL or MariaDB, ready for sites.
Write firewall rules and hope you did not lock yourself out.Only SSH, HTTP and HTTPS are open at the start. Edit rules in Firewall Management, with a warning before risky ones.
Install something to block password-guessing bots.Fail2Ban runs on every server. Ban or unban an IP address from the dashboard.
Log in every week to apply security updates.Ubuntu security updates install automatically. Turn on Automatic Reboot to finish kernel updates at a time you choose.
Write and test your own backup scripts.Schedule site backups to the server or your own storage, and add whole-server backups for 20% of the server price.
Set up your own graphs to see why the server is slow.Monitoring shows RAM, CPU, disk and uptime, plus usage per site. Get an alert by email or Slack when the disk runs low.
Search forums when something breaks.Ask our support team any time, day or night.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Everything A Managed VPS Should Include

The server, the setup and the upkeep are in the price. You still get the control of your own machine.

  • Root Access Kept

Connect over SSH with your own keys, or open a terminal in the browser. Nothing is locked away.

  • Unlimited Sites

A plan is a server, not a site. Host as many sites and apps as it has room for.

  • Free SSL, Renewed

Each site gets a free certificate once its domain points at the server, and it renews on its own.

  • Resize When You Grow

Move the server to a bigger plan with more CPU, RAM and storage from the dashboard.

  • Bring Sites Across

Move WordPress sites from another host, or every site on an Ubuntu server at once with Migrate Full Server.

  • Teams And Roles

Invite teammates or clients and choose what each one can see and change.

With self-managed you pay your own cloud provider for the server. xCloud charges a management fee per connected server per month, which drops as you connect more servers.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!
Brian Geovanny
I've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.
Kevin Pineda
I'm moving my servers to xCloud, a cloud control panel by M Asif Rahman and the WPDeveloper team. Their roadmap looks interesting and no, there are no team mates nor API limits with xCloud! #xCloud #wordpress #hosting

xCloud is like having an expert server team on call — without the big agency costs. It's given me back my time and given my clients peace of mind. Highly recommended for freelancers and small teams who want reliable performance and security.

xCloud isn't just a solution. It's like one of that friend who got your back when you screw things up pretty bad.

Trust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍

So far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.
Massimo Villa
Came from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.
Gerson El
I've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony Lewis
I came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowell
I like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose

Dear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Talk To Us
What is managed VPS hosting?

It is a virtual private server that a hosting company sets up, secures and keeps up to date for you. On xCloud, you get your own server with root access, and xCloud handles the server setup, the firewall, Fail2Ban and security updates. You look after your sites and apps.

What is the difference between managed and unmanaged VPS hosting?

With an unmanaged VPS you get a bare operating system and do everything else yourself: install the web server and database, write firewall rules, apply updates and set up backups. A managed VPS comes ready for sites, and the upkeep is done for you.

Do I still get root access on a managed VPS?

Yes. Add your SSH keys and connect as root or a sudo user, or open a terminal in the browser. Managed means the setup and upkeep are done for you, not that the server is locked.

What does xCloud not manage?

Your own code and content. xCloud keeps the server, its security and its updates in shape, but it does not edit your application or your site's plugins and themes. Updates for PHP, MySQL, MariaDB, Redis and Node.js install automatically only after you turn on Managed Service Updates on the server's Security Update page. It is off by default.

Are backups included?

Site backups are part of every server: schedule them to the server itself and to up to two storage providers of your own, such as an S3-compatible bucket. Whole-server backups are an option on managed servers for an extra 20% of the server price.

How much does managed VPS hosting cost on xCloud?

Managed servers start at $5 a month for 1 GB RAM, 1 vCPU and 25 GB SSD, and go up to 64 GB RAM. You pay for the server, not per site. If you already have a VPS at another provider, you can connect it as a self-managed server instead.

Can I change regions later?

No. A server's region is fixed once it is created. To move, create a server in the new region and move your sites with Clone Site or a full server migration.
