What is Meilisearch?

Meilisearch is an open-source search engine API built for fast, typo-tolerant, relevant search. Teams put it behind product catalogues, documentation, internal tools and AI retrieval workflows, and talk to it over a plain HTTP API with official SDKs.

Is self-hosted Meilisearch free?

The Community Edition this template deploys is MIT-licensed, and Meilisearch states that self-hosting is free. You pay for the server it runs on and you own updates, backups and scaling. Meilisearch Cloud and any commercial products are separate and are not bundled here.

Do I need technical skills?

You need to be comfortable calling an HTTP API — this is a search backend for developers, not a website. The deployment part is handled: no Compose file, no master-key wrangling, no port juggling. Leave the key field empty and we generate a 32-character one for you.

How does my application connect to it?

Through the API URL, host and port shown in the xCloud credentials panel after install, using the standard Meilisearch HTTP API or an official SDK. This template deploys Meilisearch as a data service, so it publishes the raw API port rather than attaching a public domain.

Can I run Meilisearch with Docker?

Yes — the Meilisearch Docker image is what this template runs, pinned to v1.51.0 and started in production mode with a persistent volume and a real health check. You get the Docker deployment without writing the Compose file, allocating a port or generating the key yourself.

Can I use it for ecommerce search?

That is one of its strongest cases. Filterable attributes and facet counts cover category, price, brand and availability, typo tolerance keeps results coming when a shopper mistypes a product name, and sub-50 ms responses make search-as-you-type feel instant across a large catalogue.

Should my frontend code use the master key?

No. Keep the master key server-side. Create scoped search-only API keys or tenant tokens for anything that reaches a browser, and restrict the published port to the addresses you trust — add a TLS proxy in front before sending credentials across an untrusted network.

Is Meilisearch an Algolia alternative?

It is commonly chosen as an open-source alternative for application search, and it removes the per-search pricing model. It is not a drop-in clone — evaluate ranking, analytics, integrations and scale against your own use case rather than assuming parity.

Is Meilisearch an Elasticsearch alternative?

It is chosen as an Elasticsearch alternative for application search, but it is not a drop-in replacement. Meilisearch has its own API, indexing model and operational trade-offs, and no general Elasticsearch compatibility is promised. It is focused on application-search ergonomics — instant, typo-tolerant results — rather than on being a general log and analytics engine.

How much server do I need?

The template's enforced minimum is 512 MB RAM, 1 CPU core and 1 GB of disk, so the 6 GB plan clears it many times over. Real sizing comes from your data: document count and size, how many attributes are searchable or filterable, indexing bursts, any vector data, and query concurrency. Watch memory, disk growth and indexing latency before you raise traffic.

How do I back it up?

The meili_data volume is the complete persistent boundary — indexes, documents, task state and API-key records. For a portable backup call POST /dumps, poll the returned task until it succeeds, then copy the finished dump off-server and record the Meilisearch version it came from. A raw copy of a live volume can be inconsistent mid-write, so prefer a completed dump.

Does xCloud upgrade Meilisearch for me?

No. New installs are pinned to v1.51.0, and a catalogue update changes future installs only — an existing instance stays on the version it was installed with until you deliberately upgrade it after reading the release notes and verifying a dump.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
