Chroma Hosting Live In 5 Minutes

Chroma hosting on xCloud lets you deploy Chroma, a self-hosted vector database for embeddings and semantic search, as an HTTPS API on your own domain. We run the pinned Chroma 1.5.9 container behind a Caddy gateway that requires a generated 48-character bearer token, keep every collection on one persistent volume, and hand you the API URL and token when the install finishes.

What is Chroma?

Chroma is an Apache-2.0 vector database and search engine for AI applications, and self-hosted Chroma gives you the whole server. It stores documents, embeddings and metadata in collections and returns the most similar results for a query, optionally narrowed by metadata or document filters. Upstream describes it as open-source data infrastructure for AI and ships Python and JavaScript clients, and the project also runs a hosted service, Chroma Cloud. Self-hosting it is an alternative to a hosted vector service such as Pinecone.

On xCloud the template deploys the official Chroma 1.5.9 image, pinned by digest, as a single container with a Caddy gateway in front. The gateway rejects any request without the generated bearer token, so only the authenticated HTTPS API is public. Collections, documents, embeddings, metadata and indexes live on one persistent volume, chroma_data. You own the server, the token and the data.

From Sign-Up to a Live Chroma In Just 3 Easy Steps

A Chroma server normally means a container, a gateway that enforces authentication, a data volume, a domain and a certificate before the first collection exists. This is the same result without assembling any of it.

  1. Step 01

Create your xCloud account and pick Chroma from the OneClick catalog. Choose your domain and server — the install form has no required fields because the token is generated for you.

  2. Step 02

    We Deploy It For You

One click. We start Chroma 1.5.9 from the official image pinned by digest behind a Caddy gateway, mount the chroma_data volume at /data, generate the token and publish the API over HTTPS on your domain.

  3. Step 03

    Create A Collection

Copy the API URL and token from the install summary, point a Chroma client or the version 2 HTTP API at them with an Authorization: Bearer header, then create a collection, add documents and run your first query.

Everything Chroma Does, On Your Own Server

The upstream vector database runs here in its client-server mode, with authentication in front and the data on infrastructure you control.

  • Collections Of Embeddings

Create collections, add documents with metadata and ids, and query for the closest matches. Chroma can embed documents itself or accept embeddings you compute elsewhere.

  • Metadata And Document Filters

Narrow a query with a where filter on metadata fields or a where_document filter such as $contains, so a search only considers the records you intend.

  • Python And JavaScript Clients

Install chromadb from pip or npm and connect to the server in client-server mode, or call the version 2 HTTP API directly from any language that can send a bearer header.

  • Bearer-Token Gateway

A Caddy gateway checks the Authorization header before forwarding. Chroma's own port 8000 stays on the internal Docker network and is never published to the host.

  • One Persistent Volume

Everything Chroma persists sits under /data on the chroma_data volume, so a single volume is the whole backup boundary for collections and indexes.

  • Telemetry Switched Off

The template disables Chroma's anonymous telemetry, and rotating a leaked token is one environment edit followed by Save & Redeploy.

Everything You Need To Run Your Vector Search 24/7

Managed hosting for Chroma, so the parts that keep it online are not your problem.

  • Chroma 1.5.9 deployed instantly
  • Official image pinned by digest
  • Bearer token generated for you
  • Private Chroma port, HTTPS gateway only
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Server backups and snapshots
  • Server security updates included
  • 30+ server locations
  • Unused balance refunded

What You Can Do With Chroma

  • Add retrieval to your own LLM app

Point your application's retrieval step at a private endpoint so the documents you embed, and the questions asked against them, stay on a server you control instead of a third-party index.

  • Build semantic search over internal docs

Load notes, tickets or wiki pages into a collection with metadata such as source, then let a small internal tool return the closest passages for a plain-language query.

  • Prototype with the same server you ship

Develop against the in-memory Python client, then switch the URL and token to this server for a persistent store, so the move from notebook to staging is a configuration change.

  • Replace a hosted vector index

Teams using a hosted vector service such as Pinecone for a modest collection can move the data to Chroma on a flat-priced Cloud VPS, keeping the bearer-token API in front of it.

Chroma vs Alternatives

Pinecone
Pinecone is a hosted vector service. Chroma on xCloud runs the open-source server on a Cloud VPS you pay for monthly, with the data on your own chroma_data volume and the token in your hands.
Weaviate
Another self-hostable vector database, available here as its own OneClick app. Choose it if you want to compare its feature set against Chroma's single-container deployment before committing.
Qdrant
A vector database you can also deploy through xCloud. Chroma's template is one container with a gateway and one volume, which keeps the moving parts few if that is all your project needs.
pgvector
pgvector is a PostgreSQL extension. Chroma is a separate service with its own collections, metadata and document filters and HTTP API, deployed here as one container behind a token gateway with one click.

See why agencies, developers, startups, and growing businesses choose xCloud to power their projects.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!

I've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.

xCloud isn't just a solution. It's like one of that friend who got your back when you screw things up pretty bad.

Trust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍

So far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.

Came from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.

I've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony Lewis
I came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowell
I like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose

Dear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

Is Chroma free?

Yes. Chroma is released under the Apache-2.0 licence, so there is no licence fee for the database itself; your cost on xCloud is the monthly Cloud VPS. Chroma's own hosted service, Chroma Cloud, is a separate hosted offering.

How do I self-host Chroma with Docker?

The template does it for you. It starts the official Chroma 1.5.9 image under Docker Compose with a Caddy gateway and the chroma_data volume, then adds your domain and HTTPS. That is Chroma Docker hosting without writing the Compose file yourself.

How do I secure a Chroma server with a token?

It is already secured. xCloud generates a 48-character token, and the Caddy gateway rejects any request without an Authorization: Bearer header carrying it. To rotate a leaked token, change CHROMA_AUTH_TOKEN in the site's Environment editor, Save & Redeploy, then update every client.

How much RAM does Chroma need?

The manifest asks for 2048 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 10 GB of disk as a floor. Real needs depend on collection count, vector dimensions, index size, ingestion volume and query concurrency. The 6 GB tier sold here sits well above that floor.

Where does Chroma store embeddings?

On the chroma_data volume, mounted at /data. It holds collections, documents, embeddings, metadata and indexes together, so treat it as one backup unit. Stop writes or stop the Chroma container before a filesystem copy, and test the restore in an isolated stack.

What is the difference between Chroma and Qdrant?

Both are vector databases you can self-host, and xCloud has a OneClick page for each. This template runs one Chroma container behind a token gateway, with a single volume and no clustering. Check Qdrant's own documentation against your workload before choosing.

Should I use Chroma or pgvector?

It depends on where your data lives. Chroma is a dedicated service with its own collections, metadata filters and HTTP API that you reach with a bearer token, without touching your relational database. If your records already sit in PostgreSQL, check pgvector's own documentation against that setup.

How do I upgrade Chroma?

Nothing upgrades Chroma by itself: the container is pinned to Chroma 1.5.9 by digest, so existing installs stay on that version until you adopt a newer template version. Back up the chroma_data volume first, then move to the newer template on your own schedule and run a collection query to confirm.

Is Chroma Cloud the same as this?

No. Chroma Cloud is the hosted service run by the Chroma project. This template deploys the open-source server on a Cloud VPS you rent from xCloud, so your data sits on your own volume and the API token is yours. xCloud and Chroma have no partnership.

Is the API open to the internet?

Only the HTTPS API is public, and every request needs the bearer token. The gateway listens on port 8080 bound to localhost for xCloud's nginx, and Chroma's port 8000 is never published. Treat the token like a password; anyone holding it can read and write your collections.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
