What is Discourse?
Discourse is an open-source community platform for structured discussions, support forums, moderation and long-form knowledge sharing. It combines searchable topics with trust levels, moderation workflows, notifications, categories and tags.
Can I self-host Discourse?
Yes. The core project is open source, and this OneClick template deploys the official Discourse application image on your own xCloud-managed server, alongside PostgreSQL and Redis.
Does Discourse need SMTP?
Yes — for this production-oriented template, SMTP is required, not optional. Email drives first-admin activation, password recovery, notifications and normal community operation. You supply your own SMTP server, port, username and password at deployment; the default expects authenticated SMTP with STARTTLS on port 587. A provider requiring implicit TLS on port 465 needs a reviewed configuration change.
What does the xCloud template deploy?
The pinned Discourse 2026.7.0 image with private PostgreSQL and Redis services, HTTPS through xCloud nginx, generated database and Redis credentials, and persistent volumes for uploads, backups, logs, queue and cache state. Only Discourse's web service is exposed, bound to localhost behind the proxy.
What do I enter during deployment?
A domain choice, your initial administrator email, a notification sender email, and your SMTP server, port, username and password. xCloud generates the PostgreSQL and Redis credentials for you.
How much RAM does a small Discourse community need?
The catalogue minimum is 2 GB RAM, 2 vCPU and 20 GB disk, which the 6 GB plan clears with room to spare for a small community. An active community should plan for 4 GB RAM or more, with disk sized for uploads, plugins, search index growth and backup retention.
What should I back up?
Use Discourse's own built-in backup for an application-aware export, and protect it together with the PostgreSQL volume and the shared uploads/backups/logs volume. Redis is also declared persistent for queued and background state. Keep off-server copies and test a restore on an isolated installation.
Does xCloud automatically upgrade Discourse?
No. New installs are pinned to 2026.7.0, and a catalogue re-sync affects future installs only. Verify a backup, review Discourse's release notes, preserve the site's volumes and mount paths, and test the update path before applying it. The official image runs migrations on startup, so readiness can take several minutes after an update or restart.
Is Discourse fully managed by xCloud?
No. xCloud simplifies deployment and server operations, but community administration, moderation, SMTP deliverability, backups, restore testing, upgrades, security review and capacity planning stay yours.
Does the template include paid plugins or official Discourse support?
No. It deploys the core Discourse application without optional third-party plugins or an official Discourse hosted-support plan. Official Discourse hosting and support are separate offerings from Discourse itself.
How long does deployment take?
About five minutes to a healthy, HTTPS-secured Discourse instance with PostgreSQL and Redis already wired up behind it, ready for you to register your administrator account.
Is xCloud an official Discourse partner?
No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and Discourse was found or should be implied. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Discourse project.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
