What is Plane?
Plane is an open-source project-management platform for organizing work through issues, cycles, modules, pages and collaborative workspaces — positioned as an alternative to tools like Jira, Linear, Monday and ClickUp.
Can Plane be self-hosted?
Yes. Plane publishes self-hosted editions, and this template deploys the unmodified, AGPL-3.0 Community Edition on an xCloud-managed Docker + nginx server.
Is Plane Community Edition free?
The Community Edition is open source and does not require a paid-edition licence key. Server resources, the xCloud service, your domain, backups, email delivery and support are separate costs — and Plane's own paid plans, priced per seat, are a different product from this self-hosted template.
Does this include Plane's paid features?
No. This template deploys Community Edition only — it does not unlock Plane Pro, Business, Enterprise or Airgapped features. Compare your required workflows against Plane's own edition and pricing pages before assuming a paid feature is included.
What does the xCloud template install?
Plane Community Edition v1.3.1, pinned for repeatable installs, alongside PostgreSQL, Valkey, RabbitMQ and MinIO. Only Plane's routing proxy is published, behind xCloud nginx and public HTTPS — the database, cache, queue and object storage have no host-published ports.
What do I enter during deployment?
Just a site title and domain choice — Plane has no app-specific install fields. xCloud generates the Django, live-server, PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ and MinIO secrets for you. The credentials panel shows the Plane URL and the God Mode URL, not the generated infrastructure secrets themselves.
How much RAM does Plane need?
The template's enforced minimum is 2 CPU cores, 4 GB RAM and 20 GB disk, and Plane's own documentation recommends 8 GB RAM for production-oriented use. That's why this page starts at the 16 GB plan rather than the 6 GB rung sold elsewhere on this site — 4 GB is exactly the floor, with nothing left over for the operating system and Plane's several services.
Is Plane a good alternative to Jira or Linear?
Plane covers issue tracking, cycles, modules, projects, pages and team collaboration, which is why teams evaluate it as an open-source Jira or Linear alternative. Check your required workflows, integrations, permissions and reporting against your team's actual needs before switching.
What should I back up?
All four persistent volumes together: PostgreSQL (users, workspaces, projects and issues), the uploads volume (files and attachments), RabbitMQ's durable broker state, and Valkey's cache and task-coordination state. Stop writes or the stack for a consistent snapshot, keep an off-server copy, and test the restore. A volume existing is not proof a backup is automatic or restorable.
Does xCloud automatically upgrade Plane?
No. New installs are pinned to v1.3.1, and a catalogue re-sync affects future installs only. Back up every persistent boundary first, review Plane's release notes and environment-variable changes, then apply a deliberate update and run any required migrations. Never run docker compose down -v on a retained site.
How long does deployment take?
About five minutes to a healthy, HTTPS-secured Plane instance with PostgreSQL, Valkey, RabbitMQ and MinIO already wired up behind it. Registering your instance administrator and first workspace inside Plane takes a few minutes more.
Is xCloud an official Plane partner?
No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and Plane was found or should be implied. This is a deployment and server-management option for Plane Community Edition, not an official Plane service.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
