WEB TERMINAL

A Web Terminal for Your Servers and Sites

The xCloud web terminal is a command line in your browser, connected to your server or site. You do not need an SSH app or a key on your device. It is made for developers and agencies, requires two-factor sign-in, and is a paid-plan feature that is not on the Free plan.

  • Open as root, a sudo user or a site user
  • Two-factor sign-in required
  • Command runner keeps a history of who ran what

WHY IT MATTERS

Why Use a Web Terminal?

Sometimes you need one quick command, on a device that is not set up for SSH.

  • Work from any browser

Open a terminal from the dashboard, with no SSH app to install.

  • Access you can control

Each team member needs the right permission, and two-factor sign-in, to open it.

  • Sessions that end

Idle sessions close by themselves, and signing out ends your live sessions.

WHAT YOU GET

What Can You Do With the Terminal and Command Runner?

  • Server terminal

Click Open Terminal on a server to work as root.

  • Sudo user terminal

Open a terminal for a sudo user from Settings, then Sudo Users.

  • Site terminal

Click Open Terminal on a site to work as that site's user.

  • Run a command

Under Commands, click Run Custom Command and let it run in the background.

  • Command history

See each command, who started it, the date and its status.

  • Quick reconnect

If a session drops, click Reconnect in the terminal's header.

HOW IT WORKS

How Do You Open the Web Terminal?

  1. Turn on two-factor

Confirm two-factor sign-in on your account. Without it, the button shows a lock.

  2. Open the terminal

Click Open Terminal on your server or site. It opens in a new tab.

  3. Run your commands

Work as you would over SSH, then close the tab or sign out when done.

LIMITS AND PLANS

What Are the Limits of the Web Terminal?

  • Plans

The web terminal works on every plan, including Free, once two-factor sign-in is on. The server Commands menu is part of xCloud's paid plans.

  • Session time

A session closes after 15 minutes idle, or after 4 hours in total.

  • Granted by hand

Terminal and command permissions are never given to members automatically.

  • Runner limits

Commands are not saved for reuse. On a site, a command runs as the site user.

Frequently Asked Questions

What people ask about Web terminal on xCloud.

What is a web terminal?

A web terminal is a command line that runs in your browser. It connects to your server over SSH, so you can run commands without installing an SSH app on your device.

Why does the web terminal need two-factor sign-in?

A terminal gives deep access to your server. Requiring confirmed two-factor sign-in means a stolen password is not enough to open one. Without it, the Open Terminal button shows a lock.

What is the difference between the terminal and the command runner?

The terminal is a live session where you type and see results. The command runner starts one command in the background from the Commands page and adds it to a history, so your team can see what was run.

Can I see the output of a command in the runner?

The history shows the command, who started it, the date and its status. If you need to read the output, use the web terminal.

Can I give a teammate terminal access to only one site?

Yes. Give them access to that site and tick the site terminal permission. They then work as the site's user, not as root. Terminal permissions are always given by hand.
