What is Paperclip?

Paperclip is open-source orchestration for teams of AI agents. Its README calls it a Node.js server and React UI that orchestrates a team of agents to run a business: you bring your own agents, assign goals, and track work and costs from one dashboard. It looks like a task manager, with org charts, budgets, governance and goal alignment underneath. Self-hosted Paperclip is a self-hosted AI agent orchestration platform, an alternative to hosted agent platforms. It is MIT licensed.

On xCloud, Paperclip is one of three agent stacks, chosen under the Agentic web server when you create a server or at checkout. It runs directly on Node.js with an embedded PostgreSQL rather than in Docker, behind a reverse proxy with SSL, and needs at least 4 GB of RAM. You supply your own LLM API keys. Can I run Paperclip without Docker?

Yes, and this is not Paperclip Docker hosting: Paperclip runs directly on Node.js with an embedded PostgreSQL database, so there is no compose file to write. Setting that up by hand on a VPS takes time and knowledge, so on xCloud the stack, proxy and SSL are provisioned for you.

What server size does Paperclip need?

xCloud's Paperclip guide states a minimum of 4 GB of RAM, so the entry plan is the Cloud VPS 6 GB, which leaves headroom for the operating system. Choose 16 GB or 24 GB if you plan to run several companies or many agents at once, since each agent run adds load.

Can Paperclip run multiple companies?

Yes. A single Paperclip deployment supports multiple companies with data isolation between them, each with its own org chart, goals, budgets, agents and audit trail. That is useful for an agency or a builder running several ventures from one server instead of one server per venture.

Do I need my own API keys for Paperclip?

Yes. You bring your own API keys: Paperclip orchestrates your agents and tracks their spend, while you pay your provider, such as Anthropic or OpenAI, directly and pay xCloud for the hosting. Enter the keys under the AI provider section when you deploy.

How is Paperclip different from OpenClaw and Hermes?

Yes. Upstream's README lists OpenClaw, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, Hermes and others, and says that if it can receive a heartbeat, it can be hired, with custom processes and HTTP endpoints extending the roster. You add each agent's own credentials yourself.

How do I back up Paperclip?

This stack is not a Docker app, so the Docker app backup feature and its volume snapshots do not apply. xCloud's server creation flow lets you enable or disable backups for the application, and you can use xCloud's server backups. Take a backup before any change, and test a restore.

How do I upgrade Paperclip?

Nothing upgrades automatically. This page pins no version, because there is no OneClick template to read one from. Read Paperclip's release notes first, take a backup, and plan the update yourself. Upstream ships frequent dated releases, so check what changed before you move an instance running real work.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
