What is Plone?

Self-hosted Plone is a secure, accessible content management system for websites and intranets. Upstream describes it as a mature, user-friendly CMS first released in 2001, where much customization, such as content types, themes and workflows, can be done through the web, and which can also serve as a framework for custom CMS-like solutions. It is a self-hosted alternative to hosted website builders, and the template lists its licence as GPL-2.0.

Is Plone free?

Yes. The template lists Plone's licence as GPL-2.0, so the CMS carries no licence cost. On xCloud you pay for the dedicated Cloud VPS plus HTTPS and deployment, and nothing here adds a paid Plone edition or subscription.

Can I run Plone with Docker?

How much RAM does a Plone cloud server need?

For a Plone cloud site the template floor is 2048 MB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 10 GB of disk, and the 6 GB Cloud VPS sold here sits comfortably above it. Sites with many users and uploaded files need more headroom and more disk.

What is the difference between Plone Classic UI and Volto?

Upstream's Plone 6 images are meant to be used together with the separate plone-frontend. This template deploys the backend with the Classic UI only, serving the site from the backend at the /Plone path, so there is no Volto frontend container here.

Where do I find my Plone site?

At the /Plone path, not the domain root. The template creates one Classic UI site there and shows the application URL in your credentials. Opening the bare domain does not show the site, so share the /Plone address or add your own routing.

How do I sign in to Plone?

Use the administrator username and password from your credentials; you choose the username and email on the install form and the password is generated. It is provisioned as a site-level Plone user before public access starts, and it is not a shared default credential.

How do I back up Plone?

Take one backup of the whole plone_data volume, from a stopped state or a consistent snapshot. The ZODB filestorage and blobstorage must be restored together from the same point in time, never separately. Restore while Plone is stopped, then check the site and uploaded files.

How do I upgrade Plone?

Upgrades are deliberate. The template pins Plone 6.0.14, and a catalogue re-sync affects new installs only. You upgrade by adopting a newer xCloud template version: back up the complete data volume first, review the upstream release and migration notes, and test against a copy of the data.

Is Plone better than WordPress?

Neither is better in general. Upstream positions Plone as a mature, secure and accessible CMS for websites and intranets, with workflows adjustable through the web. Compare the editing experience, ecosystem and hosting effort each needs for your site before choosing.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
