What is Instatic?

Instatic is a self-hosted CMS where the visual editor, content engine and publisher all live in one Bun server. Upstream says the pages it ships are clean enough to read in view-source, with plain semantic HTML and compact CSS. Run on your own server it is a self-hosted Instatic, an alternative to a hosted site builder such as Webflow or Squarespace, with the code under the MIT licence and your site in your own database.

On xCloud it is Instatic 0.0.18 from an owner-approved xCloud-built image, pinned by digest, with SQLite on the instatic_data volume and uploads on instatic_uploads. The source is unchanged from upstream. It is a beta, pre-1.0 release that upstream does not recommend for hostile multi-user environments without review. There is no pre-created owner password: you create the owner yourself at the admin address.

Can I run Instatic in Docker?

Yes, and this template is Instatic Docker hosting without the setup: one container running Instatic 0.0.18, pinned by digest, with SQLite and two named volumes, a generated secret key and HTTPS on your own domain. The image is an interim xCloud-built mirror.

How much RAM does Instatic need?

Instatic wants 512 MB of RAM, one CPU core and 2 GB of disk at minimum. Smoke tests ran under a 768 MB limit, which is not a load benchmark. The 6 GB tier is our entry rung.

How do I create the first Instatic owner?

Open your domain's /admin address right after installing and enter the site name, owner email and a password of at least 12 characters. The setup API closes permanently once the first owner exists, so do it before anyone else finds the address.

Is Instatic production ready?

Treat it as beta. Upstream marks the pre-1.0 release as unsuitable for hostile multi-user environments without careful operator review. Keep the owner password strong, review access, and test your backups before relying on it for a public site.

What is the Instatic secret key for?

INSTATIC_SECRET_KEY protects saved provider credentials and TOTP multi-factor seeds. Keep it private and unchanged. If it is lost or rotated, re-enter the encrypted credentials and re-enroll multi-factor authentication. Back it up alongside both volumes, because the volumes alone cannot be restored usefully without it.

Is Instatic free?

Yes. Instatic is open source under the MIT licence, so the software carries no fee. The dedicated Cloud VPS holding your site and uploads is the only cost, which makes this an Instatic cloud of your own.

How do I back up Instatic?

Back up instatic_data and instatic_uploads as one set, together with the INSTATIC_SECRET_KEY value. Stop writes before copying SQLite. Restore both volumes and the same key, then check the owner login and an uploaded asset. Nothing schedules this for you.

How do I upgrade Instatic?

Your Instatic stays on its pinned 0.0.18 image until you take up a newer template version. Back up instatic_data, instatic_uploads and the key first, and read the upstream migration notes. Nothing upgrades automatically, and the image is an xCloud-built mirror until upstream publishes one.

Who publishes the Instatic image?

An owner-approved xCloud build in a personal registry namespace, not an upstream package. The application source is unchanged from upstream, with two packaging changes, and the template pins the multi-architecture digest. Upstream's own stable image is preferred once it exists.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
