What is WireGuard?

Self-hosted WireGuard is a VPN you run on your own server. Upstream describes WireGuard as an extremely simple yet fast and modern VPN that uses state-of-the-art cryptography. A connection is made by exchanging public keys, much like SSH keys, and the tunnel carries IP packets over UDP through a network interface such as wg0. It lives inside the Linux kernel, the kernel components are GPLv2, and it can stand in for a subscription such as NordVPN when you need a private tunnel to your own server.

Is WireGuard free?

Yes. WireGuard is open source, and upstream states its kernel components are released under the GPLv2, with other projects under MIT, BSD, Apache 2.0 or GPL depending on context. What you pay xCloud for is the dedicated Cloud VPS and its management, billed monthly with no lock-in.

How do I set up a WireGuard VPN server with Docker?

You do not have to. WireGuard Docker hosting on xCloud means a OneClick app on a dedicated Cloud VPS, with the server provisioned and WireGuard deployed for you. Upstream notes the interface can also be moved into a container's network namespace, but this page does not configure that.

Is WireGuard faster than OpenVPN?

Upstream's stated intent is for WireGuard to be considerably more performant than OpenVPN, helped by fast cryptographic primitives and living inside the Linux kernel. xCloud publishes no benchmarks of its own, and real speed depends on your server, its network and the clients you connect from.

What port does WireGuard use?

WireGuard carries encrypted packets over UDP, to the endpoint and port you configure for each peer. There is no template manifest for this app, so xCloud does not state which port this deployment opens. A VPN endpoint must be reachable by its peers, so keep your keys private.

How do I add a client to a WireGuard server?

Clients are peers: you configure the interface with your private key and each peer's public key, then run a WireGuard client on the device with the server as its endpoint. Because there is no template manifest, xCloud provides no dashboard form for this, so you manage peers yourself.

Is WireGuard secure?

What is the difference between WireGuard and Tailscale?

WireGuard is the VPN itself: a tunnel between peers whose public keys you exchange and manage. Tailscale is a separate hosted service, and its features are outside the sources behind this page. Here you run WireGuard on a server you own, so no third party sits in the middle.

How do I update a WireGuard server?

xCloud records no pinned version for this app, because there is no template manifest, so this page cannot describe a version bump or an upgrade path. Server security updates are part of the managed Cloud VPS; changes to WireGuard itself and its configuration are yours to make.

What should I back up?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
