What is Artalk?

Artalk is an intuitive yet feature-rich comment system, ready for immediate deployment into any blog, website or web application. The client is about 40 KB of vanilla JavaScript that is framework-agnostic, the server is written in Go, and it covers moderation, notifications, captcha, image upload and Markdown. Run on your own server it is a self-hosted Artalk, an alternative to a hosted service such as Disqus, giving comments for static sites that have no backend, under the MIT licence.

On xCloud it is one container, the Artalk 2.10.0 image pinned by digest, with SQLite at /data on the artalk_data volume. You choose the administrator username and email and a default site name, xCloud generates the password and signing key, and the dashboard is served at /sidebar/ over HTTPS.

How do I self-host Artalk with Docker?

This template is Artalk Docker hosting without the setup: the Artalk 2.10.0 image pinned by digest, one container, SQLite in the artalk_data volume at /data and an HTTPS route to port 23366. Upstream documents one-click Docker deployment, and here the administrator is created at install.

Which database does Artalk use?

This template uses Artalk's supported SQLite baseline, stored in the artalk_data volume beside uploaded images, logs and the generated configuration. There is no separate database container, so there is no database password to rotate and one volume holds everything.

How do I add Artalk to my website?

Embed the Artalk client on your pages using upstream's client integration guide, pointing it at your Artalk domain and the site name you created. The site URL in the dashboard must match your real site, or the widget will not load.

Why does the Artalk widget not load?

Most often the site URL or trusted-domain settings do not match the site that embeds the widget, or the server address in the client config is wrong. Check the default site URL in the dashboard first, then the browser console.

Is Artalk a good alternative to Disqus?

It does the same job, comments on your own pages, but you host it, so you handle moderation, backups and upgrades. This page makes no claim about spam catch rates or readership, so test moderation with your own traffic.

How much RAM does Artalk need?

The template baseline is 512 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 4 GB of disk, and image uploads, logs and a large comment history will add to disk use. This page sells the 6 GB tier, which leaves ample room for other apps.

Is Artalk open source?

Yes. Artalk is released under the MIT licence, so the comment system is free software. You rent only the dedicated Cloud VPS it runs on. Any captcha or notification provider you connect may have its own terms.

How do I back up Artalk?

Back up the complete artalk_data volume, which holds the generated configuration, SQLite database, uploaded images, logs and state. Quiesce writes or take an SQLite-aware snapshot first, and keep the APP_KEY. Backups are not scheduled by the platform, so make your own and rehearse a restore.

How do I update Artalk?

Nothing updates itself: 2.10.0 is pinned by digest. Back up the whole volume, read the upstream release and migration notes, then adopt a newer xCloud template version when one is published, keeping the volume. Changing the admin values in the environment does not rotate the account.

Is this an Artalk cloud service?

It is Artalk on a dedicated Cloud VPS under your xCloud login, an Artalk cloud of your own at your domain. Keep APP_KEY stable, because it protects signed application data, and change administrator details inside Artalk.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
