What is SillyTavern?

SillyTavern describes itself as an LLM frontend for power users. It is a browser interface for character-driven conversations with AI model providers you choose, with server plugins and third-party extensions. Self-hosted SillyTavern is the alternative to a hosted AI chat front end, under the AGPL-3.0 licence. It is only the front end: inference happens at the model provider you connect, and none is bundled.

On xCloud it is SillyTavern 1.18.0, the official image pinned by digest, as one container with its built-in Basic authentication switched on before the site is reachable, using generated credentials. Four volumes hold configuration, data (users, characters, chats and settings), plugins and third-party extensions. The proxy caps request bodies at 100 MB, which matters for large imports.

Can you self-host SillyTavern with Docker?

Yes. Upstream ships a Dockerfile and a container image, and this template is SillyTavern Docker hosting already assembled: the 1.18.0 image pinned by digest, four volumes, generated Basic Auth and HTTPS. It is your own SillyTavern cloud front end, with no model attached.

How much RAM does SillyTavern need?

The template asks for 2048 MB of RAM, 1 vCPU and 5 GB of storage for the front end. The 6 GB plan is the entry rung here. Inference does not run on this server, so a provider's model size adds nothing to these requirements.

Is SillyTavern free?

Yes, AGPL-3.0 open source with no fee for the software. xCloud bills the Cloud VPS, your model provider bills its own usage, and the server can be cancelled whenever you like. Characters and chats stay in volumes that you control.

Does SillyTavern include an AI model?

No. SillyTavern is a front end. Configure a model provider you own inside the application after signing in; inference happens at that provider and its resource needs are not part of this server. Store provider keys only inside SillyTavern, never in tickets or screenshots.

How is SillyTavern protected?

By SillyTavern's built-in Basic authentication, switched on before public ingress, with a generated username and 32-character password shown in the installation credentials. HTTPS is handled by xCloud nginx. Anyone holding those credentials can use your characters and keys, so keep them private.

Is there an upload limit in SillyTavern?

The proxy caps request bodies at 100 MB. Character card imports and small lorebooks fit comfortably, but large Data Bank documents or bulk chat and settings restores can exceed it. Split big imports into smaller files, or restore data onto the volume directly.

Where does SillyTavern store characters and chats?

Mostly in the sillytavern_data volume, which holds users, characters, chats and settings. Configuration sits in sillytavern_config, server plugins in sillytavern_plugins and third-party extensions in sillytavern_extensions. All four are persistent named volumes that survive a restart or a redeploy.

How do I back up SillyTavern?

Back up all four volumes together while the application is stopped or quiesced: sillytavern_config, sillytavern_data, sillytavern_plugins and sillytavern_extensions. Restore all four with the same pinned image, and treat the copies as sensitive, since chats and settings may hold personal content.

How do I upgrade SillyTavern?

The install stays on pinned 1.18.0 until you adopt a newer template version. Back up all four volumes, consult upstream's release notes, then redeploy and check sign-in, a character and a chat. Existing sites are never upgraded automatically, and extensions may need their own updates.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
