What is Mage AI?

Mage, which its README now calls Mage OSS, is a self-hosted development environment designed to help teams create production-grade data pipelines. You build pipelines in Python, SQL or R in a modular, notebook-style interface, run them manually or on a cron schedule, connect to databases, APIs and cloud storage with prebuilt connectors, and debug with logs and live previews. Self-hosted Mage AI is a pipeline tool you run yourself instead of a hosted integration service such as Fivetran. It is licensed under Apache-2.0.

As deployed on xCloud, the template runs Mage 0.9.79, pinned by digest, as one container with built-in authentication enabled and no public sign-up. The project, blocks, run history and Mage's internal SQLite database sit on the mage_data volume. The owner account can open an in-browser terminal and run arbitrary code inside the container, so give Editor or Owner roles only to trusted users. Mage Pro, the project's separate core platform, is not included.

Is Mage AI free?

Yes. Mage's open-source edition is under Apache-2.0, and you can read the licence at the pinned 0.9.79 tag linked on this page. xCloud bills for the Cloud VPS under it, not for Mage. Mage Pro, the project's separate core platform, is not part of this template.

Can you self-host Mage AI with Docker?

Yes, and this Mage AI Docker hosting template does it for you: the official mageai/mageai image, pinned by digest, is a lone container on your own server, with its port 6789 kept on loopback and served over HTTPS on your domain. It is not a Mage AI cloud account, so pipelines and run history stay with you.

How much RAM does Mage AI need?

Mage AI's manifest sets a minimum of 3072 MB of RAM, because pipelines run inside the same container as the editor. Large datasets need more. That floor is why this page sells the 16 GB tier rather than the 6 GB one.

How do I sign in to Mage AI?

Open your HTTPS address and sign in with the owner email and generated password from the credentials. The first boot creates the default project and can take a few minutes. Change the password under Settings, Account, Profile, because the install values only seed the first account.

How do I change the Mage AI owner password?

Inside Mage, under Settings, Account, Profile. The owner email and password in the Environment editor only create the owner account on the first boot, so editing them later does not change the existing account. Use a strong password, since this account can run code.

Can I add users to Mage AI?

Why must the Mage AI JWT secret stay the same?

It signs sign-in tokens, and the template replaces Mage's built-in default so tokens cannot be forged. Changing it and restarting signs every user out. Keep it with your environment backup, and treat that backup as private, since it contains the sign-in secret.

How do I back up Mage AI?

Back up the mage_data volume, which holds the project's pipelines, blocks and configuration, plus Mage's SQLite database of users, triggers and runs and block output variables. Stop the application or pause triggers first, and back up the environment separately and privately.

How do I upgrade Mage AI?

A live 0.9.79 install keeps its pinned image, and moving to a newer template version is a step you take yourself. Back up the volume first and read Mage's release notes. Mage migrates its internal database on start, so allow a minute, then run a test pipeline.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
