Code Server Hosting Live In 5 Minutes
Code Server hosting on xCloud puts VS Code in a browser tab on a server you control. Deploy Code Server in one click: xCloud runs the pinned 4.131.0 image as one container, mounts a persistent home volume for your files and extensions, generates the login password and publishes it over HTTPS on your domain, so you can code from any device against the same environment.

What is Code Server?
Code Server, which upstream writes as code-server, runs VS Code on a remote machine and lets you reach it in the browser. Self-hosted Code Server is MIT-licensed and gives you a consistent development environment on any device while the heavy work, such as tests, compilations and downloads, runs on your server. Upstream positions it as a self-hosted, free and open-source alternative to GitHub Codespaces that runs on any machine with few limitations, and it adds password authentication to the VS Code core.
This template deploys code-server 4.131.0 as one container behind xCloud's nginx, with password authentication enabled and WebSocket proxying handled. The code_server_home volume mounts the whole /home/coder directory, so settings, extensions and the /home/coder/project workspace persist. The template mounts no Docker socket, SSH agent or host directories.
From Sign-Up to a Live Browser IDE In Just 3 Easy Steps
A code-server install normally means a container, a persistent home directory, a password, WebSocket-aware proxying, a domain and a certificate before the first file opens. This is the same result without assembling any of it.
Step 01
Sign Up
Create your xCloud account and pick Code Server from the OneClick catalog. Choose your domain and target server; xCloud generates the 32-character login password, so there is nothing to invent.
Step 02
We Deploy It For You
One click. We start the official code-server 4.131.0 image pinned by digest, mount the code_server_home volume at /home/coder, bind port 8080 to localhost and publish the editor over HTTPS on your domain.
Step 03
Open The Project Folder
Open the HTTPS URL, sign in with the generated password, then open /home/coder/project in the Explorer and create a file or clone a repository from the integrated terminal.
Everything Code Server Does, On Your Own Server
code-server runs here as a browser IDE with its settings, extensions and workspace stored on a volume you control.
VS Code In A Browser Tab
Upstream runs VS Code on any machine and serves it to the browser, so the same environment is reachable from a laptop, tablet or any other device.
Integrated Terminal
The editor includes a terminal that runs commands inside the container, which is how you clone repositories into /home/coder/project.
Open VSX Extensions
Extensions install from the Open VSX gallery, because Microsoft's marketplace terms bar non-Microsoft builds; a few closed-source extensions, such as Live Share, are unavailable.
Password Authentication
Upstream uses password authentication by default, and this template sets a generated 32-character password you read in the xCloud credentials panel.
Work Runs On Your Server
Intensive tasks such as tests, compilations and downloads run on the server rather than the device in your hands, which saves laptop battery.
A Persistent Home Directory
Everything under /home/coder, including workspace files, user settings and installed extensions, lives on the code_server_home volume across restarts.
Everything You Need To Run Your Browser IDE 24/7

- Official image pinned by digest
- Login password generated for you
- Port 8080 kept behind xCloud nginx

- 30+ server locations
- Unused balance refunded
What You Can Do With Code Server
Run a remote development environment
A developer keeps one workspace on a Cloud VPS and opens it from a laptop, a tablet or a borrowed machine, picking up the same files, settings and extensions each time.
Offload builds from a thin laptop
Someone on a low-power laptop runs tests and compilations on the server through the integrated terminal, so the intensive work stops draining the local battery.
Replace a hosted cloud IDE subscription
A freelancer moves from a paid cloud development service to Code Server on a domain they control, with the project folder and editor state on their own volume.
Give a learner a browser-only setup
An instructor or self-learner uses one URL and a password instead of installing an editor, a toolchain and extensions on every machine they use.
Code Server vs Alternatives
- GitHub Codespaces
- Code Server is the alternative to GitHub Codespaces you self-host. Upstream's FAQ describes code-server as self-hosted, free, open source and runnable on any machine with few limitations, so the workspace sits on a server you choose.
- Gitpod
- Gitpod is another option for cloud development environments; compare it using its own documentation. Code Server is MIT-licensed software you run yourself, so the workspace, the editor settings and the password sit on a Cloud VPS that you control.
- OpenVSCode Server
- Upstream's FAQ says code-server pulls VS Code in and patches it to improve the self-hosted experience, adding password authentication, hosting at sub-paths, settings stored on disk and web views that do not call Microsoft's servers.
- Coder
- The code-server README points teams that manage many workspaces on their own infrastructure to the separate coder/coder project. This template instead deploys one code-server container with one login password.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!
Brian GeovannyI've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.
Kevin PinedaI'm moving my servers to xCloud, a cloud control panel by M Asif Rahman and the WPDeveloper team. Their roadmap looks interesting and no, there are no team mates nor API limits with xCloud! #xCloud #wordpress #hosting
Leo KooHow Cloud Nine Web Elevated Client Experience While Streamlining Hosting Operations using xCloud
Ed EllinghamxCloud is like having an expert server team on call — without the big agency costs. It's given me back my time and given my clients peace of mind. Highly recommended for freelancers and small teams who want reliable performance and security.
Dumitru ButucelxCloud isn't just a solution. It's like one of that friend who got your back when you screw things up pretty bad.
Waqar AhmedTrust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍
Rahul SinghSo far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.
Massimo VillaCame from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.
Gerson ElI've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony LewisI came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowellI like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose
David McCanHow Kevin Heinrichs Cut Hosting Costs by 84% While Running WooCommerce & Node.js Sites Efficiently
Kevin HeinrichsI had 150 sites on cloudways and am in the process of moving them to xcloud. Much faster and better priced.
Dan SpinozaDear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.
Rahil MaknojiaCame from runcloud. Tried xcloud and never came back.

Blaine MooreFrequently Asked Questions
Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.
Can I self-host Code Server with Docker?
Yes, and Code Server Docker hosting is what this template does. Upstream's official codercom/code-server image runs 4.131.0 pinned by digest as one container with a persistent home volume, your domain and HTTPS, instead of a Compose file and WebSocket-aware proxy you maintain yourself.
How much RAM does Code Server need?
The code-server manifest floor is 1024 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 4 GB of disk as a floor, and upstream's requirements suggest 1 GB and 2 vCPUs. The 6 GB Cloud VPS here clears both. Repository size, language servers, builds and extensions can need much more.
How do I update Code Server?
Code Server does not update itself here: 4.131.0 is pinned by digest, and a catalogue re-sync does not touch existing sites. Back up code_server_home, read the upstream release notes, update the image pin, then check login, extensions, workspace files and the terminal after the container is recreated.
What should I back up for Code Server?
Back up the whole code_server_home volume while the application is stopped or quiesced. It mounts /home/coder, so it holds your workspace files, user settings and installed extensions together. Restore into a disposable install first to test the backup before you rely on it.
Is code-server the same as VS Code?
Not entirely. Upstream says code-server takes the open-source core of VS Code and runs it in the browser, but it is not equivalent to Microsoft's VS Code: the extension marketplace differs, and code-server adds password authentication and settings stored on disk.
Can I use VS Code extensions in code-server?
Many, but not all. Microsoft's terms stop non-Microsoft builds using its marketplace, so code-server installs from the Open VSX gallery. Closed-source extensions such as Live Share and the Remote SSH, Containers and WSL extensions are unavailable. You can also install a VSIX file.
Does code-server need HTTPS?
On xCloud you get it anyway: the editor is published over HTTPS through nginx, which also proxies the WebSocket, and port 8080 stays bound to localhost. Keep password authentication on and never expose port 8080 directly, as the template README advises.
Is Code Server free and open source?
Yes. code-server is open source under the MIT licence, and the LICENSE file at the v4.131.0 tag is the MIT text. xCloud charges for the server and its setup; the editor itself has no seat licence.
Who owns the data stored in Code Server?
You do. This is Code Server cloud hosting on a dedicated Cloud VPS only you use, so your project files, settings and extensions sit on the code_server_home volume. Do not store host SSH or Docker credentials in the container unless you accept that boundary.
Can the editor reach the rest of my server?
Not by default. The template mounts no host Docker socket, SSH agent, GPG agent or source directories. The terminal runs inside the container, where the coder user has passwordless sudo, so installed packages may be lost when the container is recreated; keep durable work under /home/coder.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
