Atuin Hosting Live In 5 Minutes

Atuin hosting on xCloud gives you a self-hosted shell history sync server, running on a server you control. Deploy Atuin 18.23.0 and xCloud runs the pinned official image behind HTTPS with an SQLite database on a persistent volume, so every machine you own can sync one searchable, end-to-end encrypted command history without a third party holding it. It is an API for the atuin client, with no browser interface.

What is Atuin?

Self-hosted Atuin is a shell history tool whose sync server you run yourself. Upstream says Atuin replaces your existing shell history with a SQLite database, records additional context for your commands, and provides optional, fully encrypted synchronisation of your history between machines via an Atuin server. The repository is MIT licensed, and the server is the part this template deploys.

On xCloud the template runs the official ghcr.io/atuinsh/atuin 18.23.0 image, pinned by digest, as one container with an SQLite database in the atuin_config volume and no database sidecar. It is an atuin sync server with no browser interface: opening the address shows a short JSON greeting. Registration is open until you close it, and the server has no administrator role.

From Sign-Up to a Live Atuin Install In Just 3 Easy Steps

Self-hosting an encrypted shell-history sync server normally means a container, a domain, HTTPS and a persistent database before your first machine can sync. This is the same result without assembling any of it.

  1. Step 01

Create your xCloud account, pick Atuin from the OneClick catalog, and choose a domain. There are no extra fields to fill in.

  2. Step 02

    We Deploy It For You

One click. We bring up Atuin 18.23.0 with an SQLite database and publish the sync API over HTTPS on your domain.

  3. Step 03

    Register, Sync, Then Close Registration

Set sync_address to your installation address on each machine, run atuin register and atuin sync, then set ATUIN_OPEN_REGISTRATION=false once your accounts exist.

Everything Atuin Does, On Your Own Server

Atuin runs in full here — the same encrypted shell-history sync as any hosted Atuin server, on infrastructure you control.

  • Sync History Across Every Machine

Keep one searchable command history across laptops, servers and workstations.

  • Encrypted Before It Ever Leaves Your Machine

History is encrypted on each machine before upload; the server stores encrypted records plus account names and emails.

  • Verified With The Official Atuin Client

Register, login and sync were verified end to end through the HTTPS proxy with the official atuin command-line client.

  • A Small Footprint

A single container with an SQLite database — no separate database service to manage.

  • Close Registration Once Your Accounts Exist

Registration can be closed after your accounts exist; existing accounts and synced history keep working.

  • Accounts And History Persist

Accounts and synced history live in the atuin_config volume and survived a container recreate in verification.

Everything You Need To Run Your Shell History 24/7

Managed hosting for Atuin, so the parts that keep it online are not your problem.

  • Atuin 18.23.0 deployed instantly
  • Client-side encrypted history sync
  • SQLite database included, no separate service
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Server backups and snapshots
  • Server security updates included
  • 30+ server locations
  • Unused balance refunded

What You Can Do With Atuin

  • Sync shell history across your machines

A developer with a laptop, a workstation and a few servers points each at their own Atuin sync server, so a command typed on one machine is searchable on all of them.

  • Search history with context

Someone who wants more than a flat history file searches commands by exit code, time and other recorded context, then syncs that history to the server for use on a new machine.

  • Keep history off a third-party service

A team that does not want its command history held by an outside provider runs the Atuin sync server itself, where upstream says the data is encrypted before it leaves each machine.

  • Run an Atuin sync server for a few people

A small group shares one server, each registering their own account, then closes registration so nobody else can create one on the instance.

Atuin vs Alternatives

Shell history sync services
Choose your own Atuin sync server instead of a hosted sync service when you want the encrypted history stored on a Cloud VPS you control. Upstream also supports using Atuin without sync, with local search only.
Plain shell history files
A default shell history file is a flat list per machine. Atuin keeps history in SQLite with extra context such as exit code, and adds optional encrypted sync between machines via a server.
Copying dotfiles between machines
Syncing a history file by hand copies it unencrypted. Atuin's server stores only encrypted history, per upstream, and the atuin client handles register, login and sync commands for you.
Syncthing
Syncthing is a general file sync tool; this page makes no comparison of features. Atuin's sync server is purpose-built for shell history, with account registration and an encryption key kept on your machines.

See why agencies, developers, startups, and growing businesses choose xCloud to power their projects.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!
Brian Geovanny
I've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.

I'm moving my servers to xCloud, a cloud control panel by M Asif Rahman and the WPDeveloper team. Their roadmap looks interesting and no, there are no team mates nor API limits with xCloud! #xCloud #wordpress #hosting

Trust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍

So far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.

Came from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.

I've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony Lewis
I came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowell
I like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose

Dear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

How do I self-host an Atuin sync server?

Deploy this template: it runs the official Atuin 18.23.0 image behind HTTPS with an SQLite database on a persistent volume, ready in seconds. It is Atuin Docker hosting without a compose file; then set sync_address in your client config to your domain and register an account.

Is Atuin sync end-to-end encrypted?

Yes. Upstream describes optional, fully encrypted synchronisation of your history between machines, and the template README says history is encrypted on each machine before upload, so the server stores encrypted records. Keep your encryption key safe, because the server cannot recover it for you.

Can anyone register on my Atuin server?

By default, yes. ATUIN_OPEN_REGISTRATION ships as true, because nobody could create an account otherwise, so anyone who can reach the address can register. After you register, set it to false in the Environment editor and redeploy; existing accounts and synced history are unaffected.

How do I connect my machines to a self-hosted Atuin server?

Set sync_address to your HTTPS domain in config.toml on every machine, run atuin register once, then atuin sync. On another machine use atuin login with your username, password and the encryption key printed by atuin key on the first one.

How much RAM does an Atuin cloud server need?

An Atuin cloud server is tiny: the template's floor is 128 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 1 GB of disk, though the 6 GB Cloud VPS sold here leaves room for other apps. Disk use grows with the encrypted history your accounts sync.

How do I back up an Atuin server?

Take a backup of the atuin_config volume, which holds atuin.db and server.toml. The platform does not back it up automatically. Stop the container and copy the volume, or copy atuin.db while the server is idle, and keep the copy off the server.

How do I update the Atuin server?

Updates are not automatic: each install runs Atuin 18.23.0 pinned by digest. To move to a newer release, back up atuin_config, then adopt a newer xCloud template version once one is published, and confirm an atuin sync works from a client.

Is the Atuin server protected by a login?

There is no administrator role and no web login; account registration is its only access control. Usernames can be queried through /user/name by Atuin's own design. You may add Basic Auth at your reverse proxy, but the Atuin client would then have to send those credentials.

Is Atuin free and open source?

Yes. The Atuin repository carries an MIT licence, so the software has no licence fee, and the sync server is the part this template runs. You pay xCloud for the dedicated Cloud VPS that hosts it. Nothing here adds a paid Atuin tier.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
