ByteStash Hosting Live In 5 Minutes

ByteStash hosting on xCloud gives you a private home for your code snippets on a server you control. Deploy ByteStash in one click: xCloud runs the pinned ByteStash 1.5.12 image with its embedded SQLite database on a persistent bytestash_data volume, generates the JWT secret and publishes it over HTTPS on your domain. You create the first account yourself, and registration is then closed.

What is ByteStash?

ByteStash is an open-source web application for storing, organising and managing code snippets, licensed under GPL-3.0. Self-hosted ByteStash gives you a code snippet manager on your own server: you create and edit snippets, filter them by programming language or by words in the content, and keep them in a SQLite database that only you can reach. It covers the job of a hosted service such as GitHub Gist, and its README presents it as one secure place to keep track of code.

This template runs one ByteStash 1.5.12 container, a Node.js and Express backend with a React front end, behind xCloud's nginx on your domain. The bytestash_data volume holds the database, and xCloud generates the JWT secret. There is no preset admin: you create the first account right after install, and new registration then stays disabled.

From Sign-Up to a Live ByteStash In Just 3 Easy Steps

Self-hosting ByteStash normally means a container, a volume, a JWT secret, a domain and a certificate before the first snippet is saved. This is the same result without assembling any of it.

  1. Step 01

Create your xCloud account and pick ByteStash from the OneClick catalog. Choose your domain and target server; the install form has no extra fields to fill in.

  2. Step 02

    We Deploy It For You

One click. We bring up the upstream ByteStash 1.5.12 image, pinned by immutable digest, mount the bytestash_data volume for the SQLite database, generate the JWT secret and publish it over HTTPS on your domain.

  3. Step 03

    Create The First Account

Open your HTTPS URL and register the first account straight away, before anyone else finds the address. After that first account exists, new registration stays disabled. Then add your first snippet.

Everything ByteStash Does, On Your Own Server

ByteStash runs in full here: a snippet library on your own domain, stored in a database you hold on a volume you control.

  • Create And Edit Snippets

Add new code snippets or update existing ones from the web interface, so reusable code lives in one place instead of scattered across notes and chat history.

  • Filter By Language

Narrow the library by programming language or by keywords in the snippet content, so the one you wrote months ago is quick to find again.

  • SQLite Storage You Own

Snippets are stored in a SQLite database on the persistent bytestash_data volume, which survives a restart and stays on your server.

  • REST API With Swagger Docs

Once the server is running, open /api-docs to explore the API in Swagger UI and script against your own snippet library.

  • Registration Closes Itself

After the first account is created, new account registration remains disabled in this template, so strangers cannot sign themselves up.

  • Generated JWT Secret

xCloud generates a 32-byte hex JWT secret at install and keeps it stable across container recreation, so sessions are not signed with a default value.

Everything You Need To Run Your Snippet Library 24/7

Managed hosting for ByteStash, so the parts that keep it online are not your problem.

  • ByteStash 1.5.12 deployed instantly
  • Upstream image pinned by digest
  • JWT secret generated for you
  • Kept behind xCloud nginx
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Server backups and snapshots
  • Server security updates included
  • 30+ server locations
  • Unused balance refunded

What You Can Do With ByteStash

  • Keep reusable code in one library

A developer saves the shell one-liners, SQL queries and config blocks they reuse, tags them by language, and finds them again by filtering instead of searching old projects.

  • Replace GitHub Gist for private snippets

A freelancer keeps client-specific snippets on their own domain behind a login, instead of scattering secret gists across a third-party account.

  • Script against your snippet library

A team lead uses the REST API, documented under /api-docs, to push or pull snippets from their own scripts and tooling.

  • Run a personal snippet store

Someone who wants one registered account and no public sign-up creates the first account at install and leaves registration closed, so the instance stays private.

ByteStash vs Alternatives

GitHub Gist
GitHub Gist is part of a hosted GitHub account. ByteStash is software you run on your own Cloud VPS, with its SQLite database on a volume you hold and registration closed after the first account.
Opengist
Opengist is a self-hosted Gist alternative whose xCloud page describes every snippet as Git-backed, with revision history and cloning over HTTPS. ByteStash is a snippet store without that Git model.
PrivateBin
PrivateBin is a pastebin that encrypts paste content in the browser before storage and supports expiry and burn-after-reading. ByteStash is a filterable library of your own snippets, not a share-once paste tool.
Memos
Memos is a Markdown-native, tag-based note-taking app written in Go. ByteStash is narrower: a place for code snippets that you filter by language and content.

See why agencies, developers, startups, and growing businesses choose xCloud to power their projects.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!

I've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.

I'm moving my servers to xCloud, a cloud control panel by M Asif Rahman and the WPDeveloper team. Their roadmap looks interesting and no, there are no team mates nor API limits with xCloud! #xCloud #wordpress #hosting

xCloud is like having an expert server team on call — without the big agency costs. It's given me back my time and given my clients peace of mind. Highly recommended for freelancers and small teams who want reliable performance and security.

xCloud isn't just a solution. It's like one of that friend who got your back when you screw things up pretty bad.

Trust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍

So far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.

Came from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.

I've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony Lewis
I came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowell
I like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose

Dear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

What is ByteStash used for?

ByteStash is used to store, organise and manage code snippets. You create and edit snippets, then filter them by programming language or by keywords in the content. People run it to keep reusable code in one private place instead of a hosted gist service.

Can you self-host ByteStash with Docker?

Yes, and ByteStash Docker hosting is what this template does. Upstream publishes the ghcr.io/jordan-dalby/bytestash image; xCloud deploys it from a digest-pinned template, with the bytestash_data volume, JWT secret, domain and HTTPS already configured so you do not maintain a Compose file.

How much RAM does ByteStash need?

ByteStash's manifest asks for 4 GB of disk, 1024 MB of RAM and one core. The 6 GB Cloud VPS on this page is well above what a snippet store needs. Snippet text is small, so the SQLite file on the bytestash_data volume grows slowly, and the number of accounts stays tiny.

Where does ByteStash store its data?

In a SQLite database on the bytestash_data volume, mounted at /data/snippets. Take a backup of that volume, ideally with the container stopped for a consistent copy, and test a restore before relying on it. The generated JWT secret is part of the template, not the volume.

Does ByteStash support single sign-on?

Upstream lists OpenID Connect settings as environment variables, but this template does not configure them. It uses ByteStash's built-in accounts: you create the first account yourself and new registration then stays disabled. Single sign-on would be something you add yourself and test.

Does ByteStash have an API?

Yes. Once the server is running, open /api-docs on your domain to browse the API in Swagger UI. Upstream's README documents it there, so you can script against your own snippet library without any extra service or port exposed by the template.

What is a good self-hosted alternative to GitHub Gist?

ByteStash is one: a self-hosted snippet manager you filter by language and content. Opengist, which has its own xCloud page, is another, with Git-backed snippets. Pick by whether you want a plain snippet library or Git history and cloning for every snippet.

Is ByteStash free?

Yes. ByteStash is open source under the GPL-3.0 licence, so no ByteStash licence fee applies. The xCloud charge is for the Cloud VPS and its deployment. Your snippets and the account you create stay on your server.

Is there a ByteStash cloud service?

ByteStash's README points to a demo and to a separate one-click hosting option run by another provider. xCloud is different: it deploys the open-source image on a Cloud VPS you pay for, so the server and the snippet database are yours. xCloud has no partnership with, or endorsement from, that provider.

How do I upgrade ByteStash on xCloud?

ByteStash does not update itself: 1.5.12 is pinned by digest, and a catalogue re-sync changes new installs only. Back up the bytestash_data volume first, then move to a newer template version whenever you choose, and sign in to check your snippets.

Who can create an account on my instance?

The first visitor, so register right after install. The template then leaves new account registration disabled, and no admin credentials are generated for you. If the address is public before you sign up, someone else could register first, so do it immediately.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
