What is DumbPad?

Self-hosted DumbPad is a GPL-3.0 notepad that upstream calls stupid simple: you open it, start typing and your notes auto-save. It supports multiple pads, dark mode, a responsive layout, fuzzy search across file names and contents, and Markdown with tables, GitHub-style alert blocks and syntax-highlighted code. It is a lightweight stand-in for Google Keep or Apple Notes when you want your notes on your own server.

On xCloud the template runs the official DumbPad 1.0.4 image as one container behind nginx with HTTPS. Pads are stored as files on the dumbpad_data volume, so there is no database. Access is a single shared PIN of 4 to 10 digits, with a 15-minute lockout after five wrong attempts. It is not a multi-user system.

Is DumbPad free?

Yes. DumbPad is open source under the GPL-3.0 licence, so the notepad itself costs nothing to license; the monthly charge is for the Cloud VPS. Because it is so light, you can run it beside other OneClick apps on the same server.

How do I self-host DumbPad with Docker?

The template does it for you. It runs the official dumbwareio/dumbpad 1.0.4 image with the dumbpad_data volume mounted at /app/data, applies your PIN, and adds your domain and HTTPS. DumbPad Docker hosting here means no docker run command and no reverse proxy to write.

Does DumbPad support Markdown?

Yes. Upstream lists Markdown formatting with extended tables, GitHub-style alert blocks and syntax highlighting in fenced code blocks. Turn on Markdown mode in a pad to render the formatted view, and switch back to edit the plain text. Notes are stored as files either way.

How does the DumbPad PIN work?

You choose a 4 to 10 digit numeric PIN during install, and every visitor enters that same PIN to unlock the site. Five failed attempts trigger a 15-minute lockout. Any value that is not 4 to 10 digits disables protection, so keep to digits. Change it later in Environment, then Save & Redeploy.

Does DumbPad keep page history?

Not as revision history. Upstream's page history is a browser cookie that remembers the last notepad you opened, kept for 365 days by default and at most 400, set by PAGE_HISTORY_COOKIE_AGE. The pads themselves are plain files on the dumbpad_data volume, so back that volume up if you rely on them.

Where does DumbPad store my notes?

As files on the dumbpad_data volume, mounted at /app/data. There is no database. All pads are in that one volume, so take one backup of it while writes are paused, test a restore, and never delete the volume during a redeploy or upgrade.

How do I update DumbPad?

There is no automatic update. DumbPad 1.0.4 is pinned by tag and digest here, and later template changes only affect new installs. Back up dumbpad_data, read the upstream release notes, then change the tag and digest together and redeploy with the same volume. Try it on a disposable install first.

Can several people edit a DumbPad pad?

Several people can open the site, and upstream's technical notes list WebSocket-based collaboration and live updates. Access is still one shared PIN, so it is not a multi-user system: no accounts, roles or per-person permissions. Add Basic Authentication in xCloud for stronger protection, or compare Etherpad for revision history.

Is there a DumbPad cloud service I need?

No. Nothing here depends on a hosted DumbPad service. The notepad runs on your own Cloud VPS, your notes sit on its dumbpad_data volume, and the only credential is the PIN you set. xCloud and the DumbPad project have no partnership.

What are the server requirements?

DumbPad's manifest lists just 512 MB of RAM, one core and 1 GB of disk, which is tiny. The 6 GB tier sold here leaves so much spare capacity that the notepad can share the server with other OneClick apps.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
