Alexandrie Hosting Live In 5 Minutes

Alexandrie hosting on xCloud gives you a self-hosted Markdown knowledge base with an extended editor, teams and workspaces, on a server you control. Deploy Alexandrie from the OneClick catalog and xCloud starts the pinned web app and API beside a private MySQL and RustFS file storage, generates the secrets, mounts two persistent volumes and publishes three HTTPS addresses. You create your own account first.

What is Alexandrie?

Alexandrie is described in its README as a self-hosted, open-source knowledge base with an extended Markdown editor, built for teams and individuals, where you organise, search, share and export notes from any device, even offline. Self-hosted Alexandrie is a self-hosted Markdown knowledge base you run yourself, which upstream positions as an alternative to Notion, Confluence and Obsidian. It is licensed under MIT.

On xCloud this template deploys Alexandrie v8.14.2 as upstream's web app and backend images, pinned by digest, with a private MySQL 8.4 and RustFS 1.0.1 for S3-compatible uploads. Two volumes hold the database and the files, and HTTPS covers three addresses that must share one parent domain. Registration is open until you disable it, and uploaded files can be opened by anyone who knows their URL.

From Sign-Up to a Live Alexandrie In Just 3 Easy Steps

Running Alexandrie yourself means a web app, an API, MySQL, an S3-compatible store, secrets, three addresses and a certificate before the first note. Here the install form has no fields at all.

  1. Step 01

Create your xCloud account and pick Alexandrie from the OneClick catalog. Map three domains under one parent domain, for the web app, the API and file storage; there are no other fields, because xCloud generates the secrets.

  2. Step 02

    We Deploy It For You

One click. We start Alexandrie v8.14.2 with MySQL 8.4 and RustFS 1.0.1, all pinned by digest, keep the database and storage console private, mount mysql_data and rustfs_data, and publish the three HTTPS addresses.

  3. Step 03

    Create Your Account Right Away

Open the web app and register at once: registration is open to anyone who can reach the site, and the first account is a regular user. Then set CONFIG_DISABLE_SIGNUP=true in the Environment editor and redeploy.

Everything Alexandrie Does, On Your Own Server

This template runs Alexandrie with a private MySQL and a RustFS S3-compatible store for uploads and backups, with the RustFS console switched off.

  • Extended Markdown Editor

A CodeMirror 6 editor handles LaTeX, custom containers, interactive checkboxes and integrated diagrams, so technical notes stay in one Markdown flow.

  • Teams, Workspaces And Nesting

Organise notes into teams, workspaces, categories and nested documents, with a five-level access model from none, read and write to admin and owner.

  • Offline-First PWA

Install it as a progressive web app on desktop or mobile and keep working offline, with changes synchronised when you reconnect, as upstream describes.

  • Search And Command Center

Full-text indexing with snippet highlights and a Ctrl+K command centre help you find documents and trigger actions from the keyboard.

  • OpenID Connect And Sharing

Upstream supports OpenID Connect single sign-on and public share links, which you configure yourself; the template turns neither on by default.

  • S3 Storage And ZIP Export

Uploads go to S3-compatible storage, and ZIP import and export lets you back up or restore selected documents or a whole workspace.

Everything You Need To Run Your Alexandrie 24/7

Dedicated server hosting for Alexandrie, so the machine under it is not your problem.

  • Alexandrie v8.14.2 deployed
  • Images pinned by immutable digest
  • Secrets generated for you
  • MySQL and storage console kept private
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Docker app backups you schedule
  • 30+ server locations
  • Unused balance refunded

What You Can Do With Alexandrie

  • Keep a personal Markdown knowledge base

A writer or engineer keeps technical notes with LaTeX, diagrams and snippets, searches them with full-text indexing, and reads them offline as an installed app.

  • Run a team wiki with workspace permissions

A small team creates a workspace, sets read, write or admin levels per document, and shares knowledge through links, on a server it rents.

  • Sign in through your identity provider

An organisation that already runs an OpenID Connect provider connects it, so members sign in with an account they have, while an administrator manages the user list.

  • Move notes between servers with ZIP export

An owner exports selected documents or an entire workspace as a ZIP and imports it elsewhere, keeping the data portable from one Alexandrie install to another.

Alexandrie vs Alternatives

Notion
Upstream positions Alexandrie as an alternative to Notion, which is a hosted workspace. Alexandrie runs on a server you rent, with notes in MySQL and files in S3-compatible storage you control.
Confluence
Confluence is a hosted wiki, and Alexandrie's README names it as something to replace. Alexandrie offers teams, workspaces and permissions, and this page makes no feature-parity claim.
Obsidian
Obsidian is a separate notes app that works on local files. Alexandrie is a server with accounts, sharing and a browser app, so pick it when several people need one place.
BookStack
BookStack is a separate wiki with its own OneClick page, organised as shelves and books. Alexandrie is a Markdown knowledge base with workspaces and nested documents.

Hear what people are saying about us

See why agencies, developers, startups, and growing businesses choose xCloud to power their projects.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!
Brian Geovanny
I've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.
Kevin Pineda
I'm moving my servers to xCloud, a cloud control panel by M Asif Rahman and the WPDeveloper team. Their roadmap looks interesting and no, there are no team mates nor API limits with xCloud! #xCloud #wordpress #hosting

xCloud is like having an expert server team on call — without the big agency costs. It's given me back my time and given my clients peace of mind. Highly recommended for freelancers and small teams who want reliable performance and security.

xCloud isn't just a solution. It's like one of that friend who got your back when you screw things up pretty bad.

Trust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍

So far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.

Came from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.
Gerson El
I've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony Lewis
I came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowell
I like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose

Dear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

Is Alexandrie free?

Yes. Alexandrie is open source under the MIT licence, linked from this page at the pinned v8.14.2 tag. xCloud bills for the Cloud VPS under it, not for Alexandrie, and the software adds no per-user fee. Upstream's quota here is 20 MB per file and 1 GiB per account.

Can you self-host Alexandrie with Docker?

Yes, and this Alexandrie Docker hosting template does it for you: upstream's web app and backend images, MySQL and RustFS, all pinned by digest, run under Docker Compose on your own server, not in an Alexandrie cloud account. The backend image is distroless and has no container healthcheck.

How much RAM does Alexandrie need?

Alexandrie's manifest floor is 512 MB RAM, one CPU core and 10 GB disk, with MySQL's performance schema turned off to save memory. More users and uploads need more. The 6 GB tier on this page leaves headroom above that floor.

Does Alexandrie work offline?

Upstream describes an offline-first progressive web app you can install on desktop or mobile, with changes synchronised when you reconnect. That depends on your browser and device, and this page does not test it. The server must stay reachable over HTTPS for sync to work.

Does Alexandrie support single sign-on?

Upstream's README lists built-in OpenID Connect single sign-on providers. This template does not configure any, so you set the provider variables yourself in the Environment editor and redeploy. Password-reset emails likewise need SMTP settings that the install leaves unset.

Can anyone register on my Alexandrie server?

Yes, until you close it. Registration is open to anyone who can reach the site, and the first account is a regular user, not an administrator. Create your own account at once, then set CONFIG_DISABLE_SIGNUP=true in the Environment editor and redeploy to stop new sign-ups.

How do I back up Alexandrie?

Include both volumes in one backup: mysql_data (users, notes and settings) and rustfs_data (uploads and the in-app backup bucket). Stop the stack or use a mysqldump alongside a copy of rustfs_data. Alexandrie's own backup archives are deleted after one day, so copy them off.

How do I upgrade Alexandrie?

Upgrades are not automatic. The template pins v8.14.2 and its companion images by immutable digest, and updated catalog entries reach only new installs. Back up both volumes, read the upstream release notes, then adopt a newer template version when one is published, keeping both volumes.

Why does Alexandrie need three domains?

The web app, its API and the file storage each get an address, and all three must sit under one parent domain, such as notes, api and files under example.com. The API sets the sign-in cookie, so a different site makes login appear to succeed and then bounce you back.

Are uploaded files private?

No. Anyone who knows an uploaded file's URL on the file storage domain can open it; the bucket allows anonymous reads and has no listing, so treat file URLs as unguessable but public links. The file storage domain is permanent, because notes store its full address.

Is Alexandrie an alternative to Notion?

Upstream's README positions it as an alternative to Notion, Confluence and Obsidian, with a Markdown editor, teams and workspaces. It is a smaller, self-hosted project, so this page makes no feature-parity claim. Test your own workflow before moving notes across.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
