What is Memos?
Self-hosted Memos is an open-source note-taking tool built for quick capture. Its README describes a timeline-first UI with no folders to navigate, notes stored in Markdown, a single Go binary with a small Docker image, a choice of SQLite, MySQL or PostgreSQL, and full REST and gRPC APIs, with zero telemetry. It stands in for a hosted notes service such as Notion or Evernote, under the MIT licence.

How much RAM does Memos need?
Very little. Memos is a single Go binary with an embedded SQLite database, and the manifest declares a minimum of 256 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 1 GB of disk. The 6 GB Cloud VPS sold on this page leaves plenty of room for other apps beside it.
Is Memos free and open source?
Yes. Memos is MIT licensed, per the LICENSE file at the v0.28.0 tag, so no licence is needed, and xCloud's only charge is the dedicated Cloud VPS, and your notes stay in a database on your own volume.
Can you run Memos with Docker?

What is the difference between Memos and Trilium Notes?
Memos is a flat, timeline-first capture tool, while Trilium Notes organises notes in a tree with richer structure. Trilium Notes has its own xCloud page, so compare them against how you like to write and find notes.
Can I stop people signing up to my Memos instance?
Yes. After signing in, open Settings, then Workspace, and turn on Disable user signup, so nobody else can register. Signup stays open until you do this, so register your own account and change the setting as soon as the site is live.
Who becomes the Memos administrator?
The first account created becomes the workspace Host, the administrator. Open https://your-domain/auth right after install and register before anyone else finds the address, because there is no separate setup step or default login, so the first visitor to register wins.
Does Memos send email or support single sign-on?
It can, but not out of the box. SMTP, storage backends and single sign-on are configured inside Memos under Settings, with your own provider details. The template configures none of them, so test each one after you set it up.
Does Memos collect telemetry?
The README describes total data ownership and zero telemetry. The app runs on your own server and your notes are stored there, though your reverse proxy and server logs still record requests as for any website.
What should I back up on a Memos server?
The memos_data volume, which holds the SQLite database and uploaded files for your notes. Copy it off the server, keep it private, and test a restore. Server-level backups and snapshots are also available on every Cloud VPS.
How do I upgrade Memos?
No upgrade happens by itself: the install stays on pinned release 0.28.0 until you adopt a newer template version. Back up memos_data first, read the upstream release notes, move one minor release at a time rather than skipping several, then check sign-in and a recent note afterwards.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
