What is Mastodon?
Mastodon is a free, open-source federated social network built on the ActivityPub protocol, with a chronological timeline and content and moderation controls you set yourself. This template deploys version 4.4.3.
Is Mastodon free?
Yes — it is free and open source under the GNU AGPL v3. What you pay xCloud for is the dedicated server it runs on and the management around it, not the application itself.
Can I self-host Mastodon?
Yes — that is exactly what this template deploys. It brings up six coordinated services (web, streaming, background worker, gateway, PostgreSQL and Redis) all pinned by immutable digest, creates your Owner account, mounts four persistent volumes and publishes it over HTTPS on your domain in a single click instead of assembled by hand.
Who becomes the administrator?
The Owner username and email you enter at deploy time. xCloud generates the Owner password during installation and shows it once in your xCloud credential panel — this account is created only the first time the instance boots, not on every redeploy.
Does this template include Elasticsearch search or S3 storage?
No. Both are switched off in this baseline (ES_ENABLED=false, S3_ENABLED=false). Full-text search and object storage are optional Mastodon features you can configure separately if you need them; media stays on the mastodon_public_system volume either way.
Does Mastodon send email out of the box?
No. SMTP is unconfigured by default, so invitations, password resets and notification email will not go out until you set authenticated SMTP in the Environment editor — do this before inviting other users.
What does xCloud configure automatically?
The Owner account from your chosen username and email, a generated Owner password, private PostgreSQL and Redis with their own generated credentials, the signing and encryption secrets Mastodon generates on first boot, all four persistent volumes, the domain and the HTTPS route. Only the web and streaming gateway is published through xCloud-managed ingress.
What should I back up?
mastodon_postgres_data, mastodon_redis_data, mastodon_public_system and mastodon_runtime_config together, as one recovery boundary. The runtime-config volume holds the generated signing and web-push secrets — losing it without the rest breaks decryption of existing data.
Does xCloud automatically back up or update Mastodon?
No. The template pins Mastodon 4.4.3 by immutable digest; a catalog re-sync affects new installations only. Read every intervening Mastodon release note and test a restore before changing the pinned release.
Why does this plan start at 16 GB?
Because the template's own manifest asks for 4 GB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 20 GB of disk — six services (web, streaming, sidekiq, gateway, PostgreSQL and Redis) running together leave very little headroom on a 6 GB server once the operating system is up. The 16 GB tier is the entry rung this page actually sells; heavier federation, more Sidekiq concurrency or a larger user base can need more still.
What survives a restart?
Everything on the four persistent volumes, because they are named volumes independent of the containers. Restarting does not touch accounts, posts, media or the generated secrets.
Is xCloud officially partnered with Mastodon?
No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and Mastodon gGmbH has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Mastodon project.
Can I run other apps on the same server?
Yes. It is a dedicated Cloud VPS, not a locked appliance, so you can deploy other OneClick apps or your own sites beside it as long as the resources are there.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
