Moodle Hosting Live In 5 Minutes

Deploy Moodle hosting and run a self-hosted LMS for your school, company or training programme on a dedicated Cloud VPS. xCloud starts Moodle 5.2.1 with a private PostgreSQL database, generates the admin password, keeps courses, uploads and plugins on persistent volumes and serves the site over HTTPS on your own domain, so only the administrator email is left for you to enter.

What is Moodle?

Moodle is described by its own README as the world's open source learning platform, used by universities, schools, companies and individuals to create personalised learning environments for educators, administrators and learners. Run on your own server it is a self-hosted Moodle site and the alternative to a hosted learning platform such as Canvas or Blackboard. It is licensed under version 3 of the GNU General Public License.

On xCloud it is deployed as two services: the erseco/alpine-moodle v5.2.1 image, a community image pinned to an exact tag, and a private postgres:17-alpine database. Courses, uploads and the database sit on the moodle_html, moodle_data and moodle_db volumes. The admin account is created for you and the site is served over HTTPS on your domain.

From Sign-Up to a Live Moodle In Just 3 Easy Steps

A Moodle site normally means a web server, PHP, a database, scheduled tasks, a domain and a certificate before the first course exists. This is the same result without assembling any of it.

  1. Step 01

Create your xCloud account and pick Moodle from the OneClick catalog. Choose your domain and server, and enter the administrator email, the only field the install form asks for.

  2. Step 02

    We Deploy It For You

One click. We start the erseco/alpine-moodle v5.2.1 image and a private postgres:17-alpine database, mount the moodle_html, moodle_data and moodle_db volumes, and publish Moodle over HTTPS. The first boot installs the database and takes a few minutes.

  3. Step 03

Sign In And Build A Course

Open the admin login from the credentials panel and sign in as admin with the generated password. Then use Site administration to create your first course and enrol the people who will take it.

Everything Moodle Does, On Your Own Server

Moodle runs here as a full learning platform, with the courses, grades and files kept on volumes you own.

  • Courses And Activities

Build courses from activities and resources, and enrol the students or staff who should take them, from Site administration.

  • Assignments And Quizzes

Set assignments and run quizzes inside a course, with submissions and attempts stored on your own server rather than a vendor's platform.

  • Gradebook

Track results in Moodle's gradebook, with grades and settings kept in the PostgreSQL database that runs next to the application.

  • Cohort Management

Group learners into cohorts so you can enrol a whole intake or department in a course at once instead of person by person.

  • Plugins You Install Yourself

Add Moodle plugins to extend the site; the code and installed plugins sit on the moodle_html volume and survive restarts and redeploys.

  • Scheduled Tasks Built In

The cron runner Moodle needs for its scheduled tasks is part of the image, so there is no separate job to configure.

Everything You Need To Run Your Learning Platform 24/7

Managed hosting for Moodle, so the parts that keep it online are not your problem.

  • Moodle 5.2.1 deployed instantly
  • Private PostgreSQL, not exposed to the internet
  • Admin password generated for you
  • Cron built in
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Server backups and snapshots
  • Server security updates included
  • 30+ server locations
  • Unused balance refunded

What You Can Do With Moodle

  • Host Moodle on VPS for your school

Host your classes on a dedicated server you control, with enrolment and grades stored in your own PostgreSQL database rather than in a vendor's platform.

  • Train staff inside your company

Build onboarding and compliance courses with assignments and quizzes, and keep the learner records on a server your organisation owns.

  • Enrol a whole intake with cohorts

Put a year group or department in a cohort, then enrol the cohort in a course in one step instead of adding each learner by hand.

  • Extend the site with your own plugins

Install the Moodle plugins your programme needs; the added code stays on the moodle_html volume, so a redeploy does not lose it.

Moodle vs Alternatives

MoodleCloud
Moodle's own hosting service, which Moodle's README lists beside its partner network; here you run Moodle on your own xCloud server and manage the site, users and plugins yourself.
Canvas
Another learning management system; choose Moodle when you want GPL-licensed software whose site, courses and grades sit on volumes on your own xCloud server.
Blackboard
Another learning management system; self-hosted Moodle keeps courses, users and files in a database and volumes that your organisation holds.
Google Classroom
A classroom tool run inside Google's services; with Moodle on xCloud the learning platform runs on a server of your choosing, with your own domain and admin account.

See why agencies, developers, startups, and growing businesses choose xCloud to power their projects.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!
Brian Geovanny
I've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.
Kevin Pineda
I'm moving my servers to xCloud, a cloud control panel by M Asif Rahman and the WPDeveloper team. Their roadmap looks interesting and no, there are no team mates nor API limits with xCloud! #xCloud #wordpress #hosting

xCloud is like having an expert server team on call — without the big agency costs. It's given me back my time and given my clients peace of mind. Highly recommended for freelancers and small teams who want reliable performance and security.

xCloud isn't just a solution. It's like one of that friend who got your back when you screw things up pretty bad.
Waqar Ahmed
Trust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍

So far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.
Massimo Villa
Came from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.
Gerson El
I've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony Lewis
I came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowell
I like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose

Dear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

How do I self-host Moodle with Docker?

This template is Moodle Docker hosting without the compose file: the erseco/alpine-moodle v5.2.1-php84 image next to a private postgres:17-alpine database, three named volumes and an HTTPS route. You enter an administrator email, and xCloud generates the admin and database passwords.

What are the server requirements for Moodle?

The template manifest asks for 2048 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 10 GB of disk. Moodle's own docs list 512 MB as the bare minimum but 2-4 GB with the OS, web server, PHP and database counted, so this page sells the 16 GB tier for real class load.

Can I install my own plugins on a self-hosted Moodle?

Yes. Moodle has a plugin ecosystem, and this template keeps the Moodle code and installed plugins on the moodle_html volume, so plugins you add survive restarts, redeploys and domain changes. Include that volume in every backup you take.

Is Moodle free and open source?

Yes. Moodle's README says it is free and open-source software under version 3 of the GNU General Public License, so you can run it on your own server at no licence cost. The only charge is the Cloud VPS that carries your classes.

How do I back up Moodle?

Back up all three volumes together: moodle_db for courses, users, grades and settings, moodle_data for uploaded files, and moodle_html for code and plugins. A logical pg_dump of the database gives the most consistent copy. Test a restore before you rely on it.

How do I update Moodle?

Each install is pinned to the version it shipped with, so a running site does not change on its own. Newer versions apply to new installs. When you do move a site to a newer version, Moodle upgrades its own database on first boot, so back up all three volumes first.

Who owns the data on a hosted Moodle instance?

You do. Courses, users and grades live in the PostgreSQL database on moodle_db, and uploads sit on moodle_data, on a server you pay for and control. xCloud runs the server and the deployment; the application and its data are yours.

Is this the same as MoodleCloud?

No. MoodleCloud is Moodle's own hosting service. This is Moodle on a dedicated Cloud VPS in your xCloud account, so it works as your own Moodle cloud server with your domain and admin account, and you decide which plugins go on it.

How do I sign in as administrator?

Open the Admin login URL from the credentials panel and sign in as admin with the generated password. To change the admin password or email, edit MOODLE_PASSWORD or MOODLE_EMAIL in the Environment editor and redeploy; changes made only inside Moodle are reverted on restart.

Does Moodle send email out of the box?

No. Outgoing mail such as enrolment notices, password resets and forum digests is off by default. Set SMTP_HOST, SMTP_USER and SMTP_PASSWORD in the Environment editor and redeploy; these settings are re-applied on every restart, so do not configure them inside Moodle.

Do I need to set up cron for Moodle?

No. The scheduled-task runner Moodle needs is built into the image, so there is no separate cron job to create. Allow a few minutes after install, because the first boot installs the database before the site reports healthy.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
