What is OpenBao?

Is OpenBao free?
Yes — it is free and open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 (MPL-2.0). What you pay xCloud for is the dedicated server it runs on and the management around it, not the software itself.
Can I self-host OpenBao?
Yes — that is exactly what this template deploys. It brings up the official OpenBao image, pinned by immutable digest, in production server mode with integrated Raft storage, mounts its persistent volume and publishes the web interface and API over HTTPS on your domain in minutes instead of assembled by hand.
Does xCloud initialize or unseal OpenBao for me?
No. OpenBao starts uninitialized. You open your HTTPS URL, choose the key shares and threshold for your recovery policy, and initialize the Raft cluster yourself. xCloud does not copy, log or retain the unseal keys or the initial root token — that output is shown only once, by OpenBao, during initialization.
What happens to OpenBao after a restart?
Without an external auto-unseal provider — which this template does not configure — OpenBao returns to a sealed state after every restart. This is expected, documented OpenBao behavior. Open the web interface, provide your threshold of unseal keys, sign in, and verify your data.
Where should I store my unseal keys and root token?
In separate, approved secure systems outside of xCloud — never in environment variables, Compose files, scripts, healthchecks, logs, screenshots or support messages. Losing them without a working rekey plan can make your Raft storage permanently inaccessible.
What does xCloud configure automatically?
The pinned OpenBao 2.6.2 image in production server mode with integrated Raft storage, the persistent openbao_data volume, the domain and the HTTPS route. Only the web interface and API (port 8200) are published through xCloud-managed HTTPS — the Raft cluster port stays private to the internal network.
How do I rotate my unseal or recovery keys?
Unseal and authenticate first, then use OpenBao's own supported rekey workflow. Never attempt to replace recovery material through the Environment editor — that is not how OpenBao's rekey process works.
What should I back up?
The complete openbao_data volume, together with your unseal/recovery material kept through a separate secure process. OpenBao's own Raft snapshot commands are the application-consistent backup path. Test snapshot restoration only in an isolated environment before relying on it.
Does xCloud automatically back up or update OpenBao?
No. The template pins OpenBao by immutable digest; a catalog re-sync affects new installations only. Before upgrading, review OpenBao's release notes, take and verify a Raft snapshot, then confirm unseal, authentication and a representative secret before removing the rollback point.
What are the server requirements?
The template manifest asks for 1 GB of RAM, one CPU core and 10 GB of disk as a floor for a small single-node installation. This page sells the 6 GB tier, comfortable headroom above that floor — production capacity beyond it depends on your secret volume, audit devices, leases and encryption workload.
What survives a restart?
Everything on the openbao_data volume, because it is a persistent named volume — your Raft storage, secrets, keys and policies are untouched by a restart. What does not survive is the unsealed state itself: you re-enter your unseal keys each time.
Is xCloud officially partnered with OpenBao?
No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the OpenBao project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source OpenBao project.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
