What is SearXNG?

Self-hosted SearXNG is a metasearch engine: it forwards your query to the search services you enable and merges their answers on one results page. Upstream says users are neither tracked nor profiled. Cookies are not sent to the search engines, each request gets a random browser profile and no ads or tracking content are served. It is an alternative to searching Google Search or Bing directly, and it is licensed AGPL-3.0.

On xCloud the template runs the official SearXNG image 2026.8.1-8892414dc and a Valkey sidecar, both pinned by immutable digest, fronted by xCloud's nginx and served over HTTPS at your domain. xCloud generates the secret key and enables public-instance mode, the image proxy and the request limiter. Valkey has no published port. There is no admin account: settings live in settings.yml on the searxng_config volume, which you own.

    Give a household or a company one search address on your own domain. Upstream describes private instances as used by a select group, so you know who shares it and no unknown operator sees the queries.

  • Keep your cookies out of search

    Queries leave your instance without your cookies and with a random browser profile per request, so the search engines see the instance's IP address rather than your device. Upstream also allows routing through a proxy or Tor.

Is SearXNG really private?

Upstream says users are neither tracked nor profiled. It sends no cookies to the search engines and gives each request a random browser profile. The engines still see your instance's IP address, which can be routed through a proxy or Tor. On your own instance you decide what your server logs.

How do I self-host SearXNG with Docker?

This template does it for you. SearXNG Docker hosting here means the official SearXNG image and a Valkey sidecar, both pinned by digest, three named volumes, a generated secret key and HTTPS on your domain, so nothing needs wiring together by hand.

How much RAM does SearXNG need?

The manifest asks for 1024 MB of RAM, one CPU core and 4 GB of disk. SearXNG cloud hosting on xCloud starts at the 6 GB Cloud VPS, which leaves room for the Valkey sidecar. More enabled engines, concurrent queries and image-proxy traffic can need more capacity.

How do I enable the JSON API in SearXNG?

This template does not enable it. Output formats stay at the conservative upstream default, html only, and JSON, CSV and RSS are off. Changing that means editing settings.yml on the searxng_config volume, so read the upstream settings documentation first, then redeploy.

How do I update SearXNG?

SearXNG and Valkey both stay on the digests chosen at install time, so xCloud does not upgrade them for you, and a catalog re-sync reaches new installations only. Back up the configuration and Valkey volumes, review upstream configuration changes, update the digests deliberately and recreate the containers without deleting volumes.

Is SearXNG free?

Yes. SearXNG is open source under the AGPL-3.0 licence, so the software itself carries no fee. The bill from xCloud is for the Cloud VPS and its upkeep, billed monthly with no lock-in, and the search providers you enable are queried on your behalf.

What search engines does SearXNG use?

The ones enabled in its configuration, which lives in settings.yml on the searxng_config volume. xCloud does not choose them for you. Review the enabled engines, the limiter policy and the providers' legal terms before you advertise the instance for broad public use.

What should I back up?

Take a backup of all three volumes together: searxng_config holds the generated settings.yml, searxng_cache holds favicon and cache data, and searxng_valkey_data holds request-limiter state. Restore them before starting the services, and keep the installed environment, which carries the secret key.

Can I make my SearXNG instance public?

You can, but plan for it. The template enables public-instance mode, the image proxy and the request limiter, yet upstream warns that open instances attract abuse that gets the instance IP banned or captcha'd. Review engines, limits and abuse monitoring first.

Is xCloud officially partnered with SearXNG?

No. xCloud has no verified agreement with the SearXNG project and runs the software independently. xCloud hosts the instance; SearXNG's own documentation and community remain the place to ask how engines, the limiter and settings.yml behave.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
