What is CookieCloud?

CookieCloud is a small sync server for the CookieCloud browser extension. The extension encrypts your cookies and local-storage data in the browser and uploads the ciphertext to the server, so another browser or tool can fetch it later.

The server has no accounts, no login and no web interface. It stores one encrypted file per sync ID, and the sync ID is the only access secret. Self-hosting it means those encrypted backups live on a server you control instead of with a third party.

Does the server see my cookies?

No. The extension encrypts in the browser and the server stores only the encrypted blob. The encryption password is never sent to the server.

How do I sign in?

There is no sign-in. You enter the server address, a sync ID and a password in the extension.

What opens in a browser at the site address?

Only a short "Hello World" line. The server has no web interface; you use it through the CookieCloud extension.

Is the server public by default?

Yes. Anyone who knows the address can upload data, and anyone who knows a sync ID can download that ID's encrypted blob. Use a long random sync ID and a strong password, and keep the address private. Basic Auth can be added in front of the site separately; the template does not enable it.

Is there a limit on how much can be stored?

Each upload can be up to 50 MB, but the number of uploads is not limited, so a stranger who finds the address could fill the server disk. That is another reason to keep the address private.

What should I back up?

The cookiecloud_data volume, which holds one encrypted JSON file per sync ID.

Backups in xCloud

Does the pinned image have any limitations?

The image is from January 2023, so it predates later changes to the server source. The extension chooses its cipher itself, so extension sync is unaffected, but the server-side decrypt endpoint supports only the legacy cipher.

Can I serve it under a path prefix?

Yes. API_ROOT is commented out in the environment file; set it without a trailing slash, for example /cookie, then Save & Redeploy and enter the full prefixed address in the extension.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update CookieCloud?

No. The template pins the image by immutable digest and new installations use the pinned release; existing sites are not automatically upgraded. Back up first, read the upstream release notes, then bump the readable tag and digest together on your own schedule. Server-level backups and snapshots are available on every Cloud VPS.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template's baseline asks for 1 CPU core, 128 MB of RAM and 1 GB of disk; measured idle use in QA was about 80 MiB. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, so the server has room for other apps beside it.

What survives a restart?

Data on the cookiecloud_data volume — encrypted sync files were still present after an xCloud Restart in QA, because it is a persistent named volume.

Is xCloud officially partnered with CookieCloud?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the CookieCloud project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source CookieCloud project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
