What is Qdrant?

Self-hosted Qdrant is a vector similarity search engine and vector database. Upstream describes a production-ready service with an API to store, search and manage points, which are vectors with an additional payload, tailored for extended filtering in neural-network or semantic matching, faceted search and other applications. It is written in Rust and licensed Apache-2.0, and it is a self-hosted alternative to services such as Pinecone.

On xCloud the template runs the official Qdrant 1.19.1 image, pinned by digest, as a single HTTPS service with API-key authentication switched on. Only the REST API and dashboard on port 6333 are published, and gRPC stays private. One qdrant_data volume holds collections, payloads, indexes and snapshots. xCloud does not manage your schema, embeddings or RAG pipeline.

Is Qdrant free and open source?

Yes. Qdrant is licensed Apache-2.0, so the server itself costs nothing in licences. xCloud bills for the dedicated Cloud VPS that runs it. Qdrant Cloud, the vendor's own managed service with a free tier, is a different product, and this is not that service.

Can I run Qdrant with Docker?

Yes, and upstream's quickstart runs it that way. This template does it for you: the official qdrant/qdrant 1.19.1 image pinned by digest, with qdrant_data mounted and HTTPS in front. It is Qdrant Docker hosting with a generated API key, without writing the compose file.

How much RAM does a Qdrant cloud server need?

Qdrant's template floor is 1024 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 4 GB of disk, with the 6 GB Cloud VPS sold on top for a Qdrant cloud database. Vector count, dimensions, indexes, payloads and query load decide real needs, and production often takes much more.

Does Qdrant have a web dashboard?

Yes. The template publishes the dashboard at the /dashboard path of your domain. It asks for the same API key you use in the api-key header, so you can create a collection or inspect points from the browser without writing a client first.

How do I secure a self-hosted Qdrant with an API key?

This template enables it for you: a 48-character administrator key is generated at first boot and required on every request, sent in the api-key header. To rotate it, change the key in the Environment editor, Save and Redeploy, and update every client at once.

Is Qdrant a good Pinecone alternative?

It is an Apache-2.0 vector database you can run on your own server. Qdrant's data model of collections and points with payloads is its own. Test your embeddings and filters on it, because this page makes no performance or cost claim against Pinecone.

How do I back up Qdrant?

Take a backup of the qdrant_data volume, which holds collections, payloads, indexes and snapshots. For consistent online copies use Qdrant's snapshot APIs and copy the snapshots off the server. Test a restore before you rely on any backup procedure.

How do I update Qdrant?

Updates are deliberate. New installs stay pinned to 1.19.1 and its digest, and a catalogue re-sync does not upgrade existing installs. You upgrade by adopting a newer xCloud template version: export snapshots first, read Qdrant's upgrade notes, keep the qdrant_data volume, then verify collections and a query. Deprecated search endpoints are removed in this release.

Is the Qdrant gRPC port open?

No. Only the REST API and dashboard on port 6333 are published, through xCloud's HTTPS proxy, because a database should not be exposed without authentication. gRPC on port 6334 stays private inside the template network, so clients must use the REST API.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
