What is Qdrant?

Qdrant is an Apache-2.0 vector database written in Rust. It stores embeddings and payloads and performs similarity search for semantic search, recommendations, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agents and other AI applications, with REST and gRPC APIs and a browser dashboard.

Can I self-host Qdrant?

Yes. Qdrant's open-source server publishes official Docker images under Apache-2.0. This xCloud template deploys that exact server on your own VPS, pinned to version 1.18.3.

Is Qdrant secure by default?

Upstream self-hosted Qdrant has no authentication by default. This xCloud template changes that baseline: it generates and enables a 48-character administrator API key at first boot and places REST traffic behind HTTPS, so unauthenticated access is rejected.

How do applications authenticate?

Send the generated key in the api-key header to the HTTPS REST endpoint. Keep it out of source control and rotate it if it's ever exposed.

Does the template expose gRPC?

No public gRPC port is declared — port 6334 stays private inside the Docker network. The supported public endpoint for this template is HTTPS REST and the dashboard.

What are the server requirements?

The template manifest asks for 1 GB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 4 GB of disk as a floor — an eligibility minimum for a small evaluation workload, not a production size. This page sells the 6 GB tier, which is comfortably above that; a small production RAG or search workload typically wants 4+ GB RAM and 2+ CPU, and larger or high-throughput use should be benchmarked explicitly.

Where is vector data stored?

Collections, points, payloads, indexes and local snapshots are stored under /qdrant/storage in the persistent qdrant_data volume, which survives a restart.

What should I back up?

The complete qdrant_data volume. For safer online backups, use Qdrant's own snapshot APIs, copy snapshots off-server, and keep multiple recovery points — a server snapshot alone isn't a substitute for a tested Qdrant restore.

Does xCloud manage my schema, embeddings or RAG pipeline?

No. xCloud deploys and operates the server boundary — the customer designs collections, embeddings, application logic, access policy, scaling, backups and updates.

Does xCloud automatically upgrade Qdrant?

No. New installs are pinned to 1.18.3 and an immutable image digest. Before an intentional update, back up and verify snapshots, review Qdrant's release notes, and recreate the container without deleting the persistent volume.

Is xCloud an official Qdrant partner?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and Qdrant is claimed. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Qdrant server, separate from Qdrant Cloud and Qdrant's premium support products.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
