What is Weaviate?

Weaviate is an open-source, cloud-native vector database that stores both objects and vectors, enabling semantic search at scale. Upstream says it combines vector similarity search with keyword filtering, retrieval-augmented generation and reranking in a single query interface. Vectors can come from integrated vectorizer models or be imported pre-computed. A self-hosted Weaviate is licensed under BSD-3-Clause and exposes REST and GraphQL APIs.

On xCloud the template runs Weaviate 1.39.2 from the official image, pinned by digest, in a single container with no separate database. Anonymous access is off, and one generated API-key user holds the RBAC root role. Everything sits on the weaviate_data volume. No vectorizer module is configured, so you import vectors or set up a provider yourself, and the port serves plain HTTP.

Is Weaviate free?

Yes. Weaviate is open source under the BSD-3-Clause licence, so the database has no licence fee. You pay xCloud for the dedicated Cloud VPS, and embedding providers you connect for vectorizing bill separately under their own terms.

How much RAM does Weaviate need?

The manifest requires 1 CPU core, 1024 MB of RAM and 4 GB of disk, which is an eligibility minimum rather than a production size. The 6 GB plan gives headroom for growing collections and concurrent queries.

Can you self-host Weaviate with Docker?

Yes, and this template is Weaviate Docker hosting without the setup: the official 1.39.2 image pinned by digest, API-key authentication with RBAC enabled, anonymous access off, the weaviate_data volume and an allocated port. There is no separate database service.

How do I authenticate against the Weaviate API?

There is no web login. xCloud generates a 48-character admin API key, or accepts your own of 16 to 64 characters, and shows it once in your credentials with the REST API URL. Send it as a Bearer token in the Authorization header.

Is the Weaviate API served over HTTPS?

Is the generated Weaviate key limited in scope?

Does Weaviate include a vectorizer?

No. The default vectorizer module is none, so no model-provider module or provider API key is bundled. Import pre-computed vectors directly, or configure a supported external vectorizer provider yourself after deployment. Upstream also supports integrated models if you want them.

How do I back up Weaviate?

Back up the complete weaviate_data volume as one unit. It holds every collection, object, vector, index, schema definition and piece of authorization data. Stop writes or use Weaviate's own backup API for a consistent snapshot first.

How do I upgrade Weaviate?

The install stays on Weaviate 1.39.2 until you adopt a newer template version. Review the upstream release and migration notes, take a coordinated backup of weaviate_data, then verify authentication and collection access afterwards. Nothing upgrades automatically.

Is there a Weaviate cloud service I can use?

Upstream runs its own hosted Weaviate Cloud. This page is your own Weaviate cloud instead: a dedicated Cloud VPS running the open-source database, with your vectors on a volume you control and access gated by your API key.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
