What is Apache CouchDB?

Is Apache CouchDB free?

Yes. CouchDB is free and open source under the Apache License 2.0. xCloud charges for the managed server it runs on, not for CouchDB itself.

Can I run a self-hosted CouchDB instance?

Yes — that is exactly what this template deploys. This exact xCloud template brings up one pinned CouchDB container, generates its administrator credentials, mounts persistent storage for couchdb_data, and publishes it over HTTPS, so a self-hosted CouchDB node is live in a few minutes instead of assembled by hand.

What is Fauxton?

Fauxton is CouchDB's own browser-based administration interface, served at https://your-domain/_utils/. Sign in with the generated administrator username and password to manage databases, documents, indexes and replication.

Why do I have to run Single-Node-Setup before using CouchDB?

A freshly started CouchDB node has no _users, _replicator or _global_changes system databases until Single-Node-Setup creates them. Skipping it doesn't just leave features unavailable — CouchDB logs a '_users database_does_not_exist' error every few seconds until it's done. In Fauxton, open Setup in the left menu and run 'Configure a Single Node' immediately after your first sign-in, before creating any database of your own.

Is this a multi-node CouchDB cluster?

No. This template deploys a single CouchDB node, not a multi-node cluster. CouchDB's replication protocol can still sync this node to other CouchDB nodes or to PouchDB in a browser — that's a database-level relationship you configure, not clustering set up for you underneath it.

How does CouchDB replication work here?

It works the same as any CouchDB install: point a replication job at this node's HTTP API and it syncs documents in either direction. It's a genuine alternative to volume backups for keeping an online copy of your data, on top of — not instead of — backing up the couchdb_data volume itself.

What should I back up?

The complete couchdb_data volume, ideally with writes quiesced while the backup runs so you capture a consistent snapshot. CouchDB replication to a second node or instance is a real, CouchDB-native alternative for keeping an online copy, worth setting up alongside volume backups rather than in place of them.

Backups in xCloud

Can I rotate the administrator password, cluster secret or Erlang cookie?

Yes, but not in isolation. The administrator password, cluster secret and Erlang cookie are generated at deploy time and used by every client and replication peer that talks to this node. Rotate any of them without updating every client and peer at the same time, and replication and client authentication both break. Keep the generated values in a protected recovery record and coordinate any change.

What are the server requirements?

The template manifest asks for 1024 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 8 GB of disk as a floor — that disk figure is higher than most other OneClick apps here. This page sells the 6 GB tier, well above that floor, with 100 GB of NVMe comfortably covering it.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update CouchDB?

No. The template pins CouchDB 3.5.2.1 by immutable digest; a catalog re-sync affects new installations only. Before upgrading, review CouchDB's release notes and your own backup, then verify Fauxton sign-in and a representative document read-back afterward.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Apache CouchDB?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Apache Software Foundation has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Apache CouchDB project.

Can I run other apps on the same server?

Yes. It is a dedicated Cloud VPS, not a locked appliance, so you can deploy other OneClick apps or your own sites beside it as long as the resources are there.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
