Databag Hosting Live In 5 Minutes

Deploy Databag hosting and run a self-hosted private messenger node for your family or community on a dedicated Cloud VPS. xCloud starts the pinned Databag 0.1.16 container with a generated admin password, keeps the SQLite database and uploaded files on one persistent volume, accepts uploads up to 2 GB and serves the web app over HTTPS on your own domain. No one can create an account until you allow it.

What is Databag?

Databag is a federated messenger for self-hosting. It is decentralised, so apps talk directly to a server node, and accounts on different nodes can message each other, with identity based on a public-private key pair rather than a hosting domain. It offers sealed topics, topic-based threads, audio and video calls and low resource use. Run on your own server it is a self-hosted Databag node, an alternative to a mainstream messenger such as WhatsApp or Telegram, under the Apache-2.0 licence.

On xCloud it is one container, balzack/databag 0.1.16 pinned by digest, holding the server, web app and SQLite. The databag_data volume keeps the database and uploads, a generated admin password guards the admin page, and account creation stays closed until you issue links. Calls need your own TURN relay, which xCloud does not provide.

From Sign-Up to a Live Databag In Just 3 Easy Steps

A Databag node normally means the server container, a database file, an admin password, an upload limit, a domain and a certificate before the first message. This is the same result without assembling any of it.

  1. Step 01

Create your xCloud account and pick Databag from the OneClick catalog. Choose the final domain for your node and a server; the install form has no application fields, because xCloud generates the admin password.

  2. Step 02

    We Deploy It For You

One click. We start balzack/databag 0.1.16, pinned by digest, as one container with the Go server, web app and SQLite together, mount databag_data at /var/lib/databag and publish HTTPS. It is usually ready in about 30 seconds.

  3. Step 03

Set The Node Domain And Invite People

Open the admin page and sign in. Set the node Domain to your site exactly, then create single-use account links to send to people. Each user sets a Sealed Topics password before starting a topic.

Everything Databag Does, On Your Own Server

Databag 0.1.16 runs here as a single messaging node, with its database and every uploaded file kept on a volume you own.

  • Federated Accounts

Accounts on different nodes can message each other, and identity is a public-private key pair rather than a name tied to a domain.

  • Sealed Topics

Upstream says the hosting admin cannot view topics that are sealed. Each user must set a Sealed Topics password before New Topic is enabled.

  • Topic-Based Threads

Messages are organised by topic rather than by contact, with no limit on group members in a thread, per the README.

  • Calls With Your Own Relay

Audio and video calls work across NAT traversal only with a separate TURN relay server. You run one and enter its details in the admin page.

  • Invite-Only By Default

Nobody can create an account until you allow it. Issue single-use account links from the admin page, or switch on open registration.

  • One Small Container

The Go server, web app and SQLite database run in one container, which upstream describes as lightweight for low hosting resources.

Everything You Need To Run Your Messenger 24/7

Managed hosting for Databag, so the parts that keep it online are not your problem.

  • Databag 0.1.16 deployed instantly
  • Image pinned by digest
  • Admin password generated for you
  • Account creation closed until you open it
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Server backups and snapshots
  • Server security updates included
  • 30+ server locations
  • Unused balance refunded

What You Can Do With Databag

  • Run a private chat for your family

Host one node for everyone in the household, with accounts you issue by link and conversations stored on a server you control.

  • Message across separate nodes

Let people on other Databag nodes talk to yours, so friends who host their own can still reach you without a shared service.

  • Keep sensitive topics sealed

Use sealed topics for conversations the node admin should not be able to read, after each user sets their sealed-topics password.

  • Organise chat by subject

Keep conversations as topic threads with no cap on group size, rather than a stream per contact.

Databag vs Alternatives

WhatsApp
Databag is Apache-2.0 software you run yourself, so accounts, messages and uploads live on your own xCloud server.
Telegram
With Databag you host the node and hold the data, and you set up your own relay for calls.
Matrix Synapse
A Matrix homeserver for self-hosted, federated chat, available as its own OneClick app; compare its protocol and ecosystem with Databag's key-based identity.
Signal
Databag has no central service: apps talk directly to a server node you run, and each node keeps its own data.

See why agencies, developers, startups, and growing businesses choose xCloud to power their projects.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!
Brian Geovanny
I've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.

I'm moving my servers to xCloud, a cloud control panel by M Asif Rahman and the WPDeveloper team. Their roadmap looks interesting and no, there are no team mates nor API limits with xCloud! #xCloud #wordpress #hosting

xCloud is like having an expert server team on call — without the big agency costs. It's given me back my time and given my clients peace of mind. Highly recommended for freelancers and small teams who want reliable performance and security.

xCloud isn't just a solution. It's like one of that friend who got your back when you screw things up pretty bad.

Trust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍

So far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.

Came from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.
Gerson El
I've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony Lewis
I came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowell
I like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose

Dear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

Can I run Databag in Docker?

Yes, and this template is Databag Docker hosting without the setup: the balzack/databag 0.1.16 image pinned by digest, one container, the databag_data volume and an HTTPS route to port 7000. Its tags are Docker tags that differ from GitHub release tags.

How much RAM does Databag need?

The template baseline is 512 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 5 GB of disk, with uploads adding to disk use. Upstream calls it lightweight, even on a very small board. That is a wide margin even on the entry plan.

Is Databag end-to-end encrypted?

Only for sealed topics. Upstream says the hosting admin cannot view topics if they are sealed, and each user must set a Sealed Topics password before New Topic is enabled. Other topics are stored readable by the node, so seal what matters.

Do Databag video calls need a TURN server?

Yes, for calls to cross NATs: audio and video need a separate relay server. xCloud does not provide one. Run your own and enter its address and credentials in the admin page; text, images and files work without it.

How do I invite people to Databag?

Sign in to the admin page, then create single-use account links and send them. Nobody can create an account otherwise, unless you switch on open registration, which is off by default and best left off on a public site.

Can I change my Databag domain later?

Avoid it. Accounts are addressed through the node's domain, so changing the site domain after accounts exist changes how they are addressed. Set the final domain in the node settings before you invite anyone, since people would otherwise have to be re-invited.

Is Databag free?

Yes. Databag is released under the Apache-2.0 licence, so the software is free; only the Cloud VPS underneath is a recurring cost, and a TURN relay for calls, if you run one, is a further cost of your own.

How do I back up Databag?

Back up the whole databag_data volume, which holds databag.db and all uploaded assets. Stop the container or use SQLite's backup tooling for a consistent copy. Neither job is automatic: schedule your own copy and rehearse restoring it.

How do I upgrade Databag?

Nothing upgrades itself: 0.1.16 is pinned by digest, a running install keeps that exact release until you move it yourself. Back up the volume, check what changed upstream, then adopt a newer template version on your own schedule rather than editing the image tag or digest.

Is this a Databag cloud service?

It is a Databag node on a dedicated Cloud VPS under your xCloud login, a Databag cloud of your own at your domain. The admin sign-in request is written to the container log, so treat those logs as sensitive.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
