What is Matrix Synapse?
Matrix Synapse is a free, open-source homeserver for the Matrix protocol — a standards-based, federated messaging network for private rooms, messages, media and collaboration. This template deploys version 1.159.0.
Is Matrix Synapse free?
Yes — it is free and open source under the GNU Affero General Public License v3 (AGPL-3.0). What you pay xCloud for is the dedicated server it runs on and the management around it, not the software itself.
Can I self-host Matrix Synapse?
Yes — that is exactly what this template deploys. It brings up the official Synapse image and a private PostgreSQL database, both pinned by immutable digest, behind an nginx gateway with Matrix's discovery routes, mounts its two persistent volumes and publishes it over HTTPS on your domain in minutes instead of assembled by hand.
Who becomes the administrator, and how do I sign in?
The administrator username you choose at deploy time, with a password xCloud generates and shows once in your credentials panel. Open a Matrix client such as Element, set the homeserver to your HTTPS URL, and sign in as @yourusername:yourdomain.
Is public registration open on my homeserver?
No. Registration is disabled by default (enable_registration: false) — nobody can self-service sign up. The generated administrator account is the way in; add more users afterward from the Synapse command line, or configure a supported registration service deliberately using the generated registration shared secret.
What does xCloud configure automatically?
A private PostgreSQL database with generated credentials, a generated registration shared secret, the homeserver's config and signing key on first boot, both persistent volumes, the domain, the HTTPS route and the Matrix discovery endpoints. Only the gateway is published — PostgreSQL stays private to the internal network.
Does federation with other Matrix servers work out of the box?
Yes. The gateway serves the /.well-known/matrix/client and /.well-known/matrix/server discovery routes on your domain, and federation traffic reaches Synapse over the same HTTPS endpoint on port 443, so other homeservers can find and talk to yours without extra configuration.
Can I change my domain later?
Not without consequence. The installation domain becomes your Matrix server name and signing identity — every user ID and every federated reference to your server is tied to it. Choose the final domain carefully before installing.
What should I back up?
synapse_data and postgres_data together, from the same point in time. synapse_data holds the homeserver's configuration, signing key and local media; postgres_data holds users, rooms, events and devices. The signing key and the database identity belong together — restoring one without the other is not a valid recovery.
Does xCloud automatically back up or update Synapse?
No. The template pins Synapse and PostgreSQL by immutable digest; a catalog re-sync affects new installations only. Review Synapse's upgrade and migration notes, take a coordinated backup of both volumes, then verify sign-in, room and message read-back, media and federation discovery before changing any pinned image.
What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 16 GB?
The template manifest asks for 4 GB of RAM, two CPU cores and 30 GB of disk as a floor for Synapse alongside PostgreSQL and the gateway. That leaves very little headroom on a 6 GB server once the operating system is up, so this page sells the 16 GB tier as the entry rung with real room for federation traffic and message history to grow.
What survives a restart?
Everything on synapse_data and postgres_data, because both are persistent named volumes. Restarting the containers does not touch your rooms, messages, media, users or signing key.
Is xCloud officially partnered with Matrix.org or Element?
No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Matrix.org Foundation or Element has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Synapse project.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
