What is Jellyfin?

Self-hosted Jellyfin is a media server: a Free Software Media System for managing and streaming your own movies, TV, music, photos and live TV to end-user devices through multiple apps. Its README presents it as an alternative to the proprietary Emby and Plex, descended from Emby's 3.5.2 release and ported to .NET. It is licensed GPL-2.0, with no premium licences or features, and takes the place of a streaming subscription for your own files.

Is Jellyfin free?

Yes. Jellyfin is Free Software under the GPL-2.0, and its README says there are no premium licences or features. You pay xCloud for the Cloud VPS it runs on, not for Jellyfin. You remain responsible for the lawful use of any media you add.

How much RAM does Jellyfin need?

The manifest asks for 2048 MB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 20 GB of disk, which suits setup and light direct play. Jellyfin's own guidance recommends at least 4 GB for headless Linux, and this page sells the 6 GB tier. Concurrent streams, bitrate and transcoding raise the need.

Can you run Jellyfin in Docker?

How do I add media to Jellyfin?

Copy files into the jellyfin_media volume, mounted at /media, then add a matching folder such as /media/movies in Dashboard → Libraries. The directory is owned by root, so placing files needs a sudo user; regular site-user SFTP uploads will not land there.

How do I update Jellyfin?

Manually. The image is pinned to 10.11.11 by digest, and a catalog re-sync affects only new installs. Back up the config and media volumes, read the release notes, keep the same volume names, change the image deliberately, then check migrations and playback. Never use docker compose down -v.

What is the difference between Jellyfin and Plex?

Jellyfin's README calls itself an alternative to the proprietary Emby and Plex, with no premium licences or features. It is GPL-2.0 Free Software. Check your needs against this template, which omits hardware acceleration, DLNA and LAN discovery, before you move a library.

Which apps and devices work with Jellyfin?

Does Jellyfin transcode video?

Yes, on the CPU. Direct play and CPU-based transcoding work in this template, but GPU hardware acceleration is not enabled because it needs host device access. Video transcoding can need much more CPU than the manifest minimum, so choose a larger server for several concurrent transcodes.

What should I back up for Jellyfin?

Three volumes: jellyfin_config holds users, libraries, metadata, plugins and the server database; jellyfin_media holds media placed there; jellyfin_cache is reproducible but speeds recovery. Stop Jellyfin or take a consistent snapshot before copying the config volume, and keep an off-server backup.

Who owns my media and data on a hosted Jellyfin?

You do. Users, library settings and media sit on volumes of your own server. xCloud runs the server and the deployment; you manage accounts, backups, updates and capacity. By default Jellyfin logs every client with the proxy's address until you add it under Known Proxies.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
