Ampache is a web-based audio and video streaming application and file manager, released under AGPL-3.0-or-later. It lets you reach your music and videos from almost any internet-connected device. Upstream stresses that Ampache is not a media organiser: it relies on correct embedded tags or file names and presents an already organised collection. Self-hosted Ampache suits people who want to stream a library they already own rather than rent a catalogue from a service such as Spotify.

Is Ampache free?

Yes. Ampache is free, open-source software under AGPL-3.0-or-later, so there is no licence fee for the server. On xCloud you pay for the dedicated Cloud VPS that runs Ampache and its MariaDB database and for the deployment around them. Your music files stay yours; the volume is on your own server.

How much RAM does Ampache need?

The template manifest asks for 1024 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 10 GB of disk, and idle use on QA was about 247 MiB. Size the disk for your music collection. The 6 GB Cloud VPS sold here sits well above that. The upstream image also starts an extra internal MariaDB that this setup does not use.

Can you run Ampache with Docker?

Yes. For Ampache Docker hosting this template runs the official ampache/ampache 8.1.0 image, pinned by digest, with a private MariaDB 11.4 container and four named volumes. It creates the administrator from your install form and puts HTTPS on your domain, so you do not write a compose file or run the web installer.

What apps work with Ampache?

Any player that supports the Ampache API or the Subsonic API can connect to your server's HTTPS address. Release 8.1.0 notes that the Subsonic API now fully implements folder browsing. Use your Ampache username and password in the app, and check the app's own documentation for the setting names it uses.

Does Ampache support the Subsonic API?

Yes. The 8.1.0 release notes list Subsonic support, including full folder browsing, and remote and Subsonic catalogs now build folder data during a scan. Point a Subsonic-compatible client at your site's URL. Folder browsing for your own files depends on scanning folders after you add music.

How do I add music to Ampache?

Copy your files into the ampache_media volume, mounted at /media, for example with docker cp into the Ampache container. Then add a catalog in Ampache that points at /media and scan it. For a large library, copying onto the server beats uploading through the browser, which accepts requests up to 1 GB.

How do I update Ampache?

Ampache 8.1.0 is pinned by digest, so an existing install stays on it. Back up all volumes, read the Ampache release notes, check the database migration path, then move to a newer template version that changes the tag and digest together. A catalog re-sync only affects new installations.

How do I back up Ampache?

An Ampache backup covers all four volumes together: ampache_config, ampache_media with your music, ampache_db and ampache_mysql_config. Stop the services or use an application-consistent snapshot before copying database data, keep an off-server copy and test a restore before you rely on it.

How do I sign in, and change the password?

Use the administrator username and password from the credentials panel on your HTTPS address, then change the password at once. The upstream image writes the initial password to the container log on first boot. Editing the administrator values in the Environment editor later does not change an existing account.

How big can uploads be?

Web uploads accept requests up to 1 GB, because the proxy in front of Ampache is set to that size. Larger individual requests need multipart or chunked handling. For a big collection, copy files onto the media volume directly and scan them in, rather than pushing them through the browser.

Can I run Ampache in the cloud on xCloud?

Yes. For Ampache cloud use, xCloud sets up a dedicated Cloud VPS, deploys Ampache and MariaDB on it and attaches your domain and certificate. If your music already sits on a VPS from another provider, attach it as a self-managed server and deploy Ampache there.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
