What is Keila?

Keila is, in its README's words, an open source alternative to newsletter tools like Mailchimp or Sendinblue. With it you can send newsletter campaigns and create sign-up forms. For smaller newsletters you can use your own email inbox, and for larger ones AWS SES, Sendgrid, Mailgun and Postmark are supported in addition to SMTP. Self-hosted Keila is a newsletter tool you run yourself instead of the project's hosted Keila Cloud. It is licensed under AGPL-3.0.

Here, the xCloud template starts Keila 0.30.2, pinned by digest, with a private PostgreSQL 17.6 database. Accounts, projects, contacts and campaigns sit on the keila_db volume, and uploaded assets on keila_uploads. The install form takes your SMTP settings, because Keila cannot send confirmation or campaign mail without them. Sender-domain verification, SPF, DKIM, DMARC and bounce handling remain your responsibility.

Is Keila free?

Yes. Keila is open source under AGPL-3.0, with its licence text linked at the pinned v0.30.2 tag, with source-sharing duties for modified versions. xCloud bills the server, not the newsletter software, and there is no per-subscriber fee. Your SMTP provider bills separately.

Can you self-host Keila with Docker?

Yes, and this Keila Docker hosting template does it for you: the official pentacent/keila image, pinned by digest, runs beside a private PostgreSQL container on your own server, with HTTPS in front of port 4000. It is not a Keila Cloud account, so your lists stay with you.

How much RAM does Keila need?

The xCloud template lists a floor of 1536 MB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 10 GB of disk for Keila and PostgreSQL together. This page sells the 6 GB tier, which leaves headroom above that floor.

How do I sign in to Keila?

Open /auth/login on your domain and sign in with the administrator email you supplied at install and the 24-character password shown in the credentials panel. Then create your first project and contact list. You choose the email, not the password.

Do I need my own SMTP provider for Keila?

Yes. The install form requires the SMTP host, port, sender address, username, password and an explicit STARTTLS or implicit TLS choice, never both. Keila cannot send confirmation or campaign email without them. Some VPS providers also restrict outbound SMTP ports, so check yours.

Is a Keila installation private by default?

No. Public self-registration is enabled by default, so additional users can sign up, which needs working SMTP for the confirmation mail. Set DISABLE_REGISTRATION=true in the Environment editor after your own administrator account is confirmed, then redeploy.

Who is responsible for Keila email deliverability?

You are. Sender-domain verification, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, bounce handling, sending quotas and provider restrictions remain the operator's responsibility, and xCloud does not manage them. Configure project senders and test with a small synthetic campaign before sending real mail to subscribers.

How do I rotate Keila database or SMTP credentials?

Change the live PostgreSQL role first, then update POSTGRES_PASSWORD and the password inside DB_URL together before redeploying, since editing one alone breaks the connection. For SMTP, update the matching mailer settings together and verify delivery before resuming campaigns. Keep SECRET_KEY_BASE stable.

How do I back up Keila?

Back up the keila_db volume, which holds accounts, projects, contacts, campaigns and templates, and the keila_uploads volume, which holds campaign assets, together. Pause campaigns and take a PostgreSQL-native dump for a consistent point, keep an off-server copy and test a restore.

How do I upgrade Keila?

A running 0.30.2 site stays exactly as installed until you adopt a newer template version on your own schedule. Back up the database and uploads first and read the upstream release notes, since a newer tag already exists. Then check login, a contact list and a campaign preview.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
