Is Matomo free to self-host?

Yes. Matomo is released under the GPL v3 or later, so the core software costs nothing to run yourself. You pay for the server. Premium plugins such as heatmaps, session recordings and funnels are separate paid Matomo plugins, and this page does not include them.

Can you self-host Matomo with Docker on xCloud?

Yes. The Matomo template runs the pinned Apache image and a MariaDB container with Docker Compose, which is Matomo Docker hosting without writing the Compose file. It needs an NGINX server; xCloud adds your domain and the SSL certificate when you deploy it.

How do I deploy Matomo on xCloud?

Create an NGINX server in your xCloud dashboard, open One Click Apps, select Matomo, add your domain and deploy. xCloud provisions Matomo and MariaDB, generates the database credentials, maps the domain and issues the SSL certificate. You then finish Matomo's own web installer and add your first website.

How much server does Matomo need?

The Matomo template's manifest asks for at least 2 GB of RAM, one CPU core and 10 GB of disk. This page sells the 6 GB Cloud VPS so the app and its MariaDB database have headroom above that floor. Busy sites with many tracked actions can move up to a larger size.

Does Matomo need a database?

Yes. Matomo stores its users, sites, goals and every visit in a MySQL-compatible database. The template runs MariaDB 11.8 in a container beside Matomo, generates the database name, user and password for you, and keeps its files on the matomo_db volume.

What should I back up on Matomo?

Back up both volumes together. The matomo_data volume holds the configuration, installed plugins and application state; the matomo_db volume holds visitor logs, reports, users and goals. The database is the main asset, so use a consistent backup and protect it as sensitive analytics data.

Is Matomo GDPR compliant?

Is this the same as Matomo Cloud?

No. Matomo Cloud is the hosting service sold by the Matomo project. On xCloud you rent your own Cloud VPS and run the free GPL software on it, so the server and database are yours. xCloud is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Matomo project.

Does xCloud upgrade Matomo for me?

No. The template pins Matomo 5.13.0 by digest, so existing installs are not upgraded automatically. A newer release arrives as a newer template version. Matomo also has its own updater; back up both volumes before running it or any database upgrade.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
