What is ZITADEL?

ZITADEL is an open-source identity and access management platform. It offers single sign-on, passwords and passkeys, MFA with OTP, U2F and email or SMS codes, OpenID Connect certified, SAML 2.0, machine-to-machine authentication, a hierarchy of organizations and projects for B2B use, gRPC and REST APIs, and an event-sourced audit trail. A self-hosted ZITADEL is identity infrastructure on your own server, an alternative to Auth0. It is licensed AGPL-3.0, with some directories under Apache and MIT exceptions.

On xCloud it is ZITADEL 4.17.1 with Login V2 and PostgreSQL, from vendor images pinned by digest, with only the gateway published over HTTPS. The zitadel_postgres_data and zitadel_bootstrap_data volumes hold identity data and bootstrap files. You sign in as your username at zitadel, then your domain, and must change the password. SMTP, organizations and applications are set up inside ZITADEL.

How much RAM does ZITADEL need?

The template floor is 2048 MB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 10 GB of disk, covering ZITADEL, Login V2 and PostgreSQL. This page sells the 6 GB plan, which clears the floor; user counts and traffic raise real needs.

Can you self-host ZITADEL with Docker?

Yes, and this template is zitadel docker hosting without the setup: the vendor images pinned by digest, a private PostgreSQL database, two named volumes, a generated master key and HTTPS on your own domain, with only the gateway published.

Which protocols does ZITADEL support?

Upstream lists OpenID Connect, which is certified, SAML 2.0, OAuth device authorization, LDAP and social logins, plus JWT profile, personal access tokens and client credentials for machines, and a SCIM 2.0 server. Check which your plan needs.

How do I sign in to ZITADEL as the first administrator?

Use the username you entered followed by @zitadel. and your domain, with the password from the install form. ZITADEL asks you to change it at first sign-in. Create organizations, projects and applications inside ZITADEL afterwards.

Does ZITADEL send email out of the box?

No. The template does not configure SMTP, so configure it in ZITADEL before enabling email verification or password recovery. Without it, those flows cannot deliver messages. Set it up before inviting users or enabling recovery.

Is ZITADEL an alternative to Auth0 or Keycloak?

Upstream positions it as both, and its comparison table is the vendor's own claim. ZITADEL is self-hostable and open source, and you own the upgrades and backups. Evaluate it against your own requirements. Pilot it on one application first.

Is ZITADEL free?

Self-hosted ZITADEL is AGPL-3.0 licensed with no licence fee, and upstream says Cloud and self-hosted run the same codebase. You pay xCloud only for the Cloud VPS, making this a ZITADEL cloud install of your own.

How do I back up ZITADEL?

Back up zitadel_postgres_data and zitadel_bootstrap_data together, and keep the master key with them. The 32-character ZITADEL_MASTERKEY must not change after first boot. Keep an encrypted copy off the server and test a restore on a regular schedule.

How do I upgrade ZITADEL?

ZITADEL stays on its pinned 4.17.1 images until a newer template version is adopted. Copy both volumes beforehand and read the upstream release notes. No upgrade is automatic, and redeploying keeps the volumes. Keep the master key unchanged.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
