What is Actual Budget?

Actual Budget is a self-hosted personal budgeting app built around envelope budgeting. It is MIT-licensed and local-first, with accounts, transactions, schedules, reports, rules and multi-device sync, plus optional end-to-end encryption for budget sync and optional bank-import integrations. For anyone who budgets in a hosted envelope-budgeting service such as YNAB, running Actual Budget yourself means the ledger sits on a server you control. Self-hosted Actual Budget keeps that ledger in your own storage.

Is Actual Budget free?

The open-source application is free to self-host under the MIT licence. You pay for the VPS and any domain you add, and optional third-party bank-sync providers may charge their own fees. This page does not quote or compare outside prices.

Can I self-host Actual Budget with Docker?

Yes. This xCloud template deploys the official Actual server container, pinned to version 26.9.0 by digest, behind xCloud nginx with persistent /data storage. It is Actual Budget Docker hosting without writing the Compose file or setting up the reverse proxy yourself.

Is Actual Budget a good alternative to YNAB?

Actual Budget is built around the same envelope-budgeting idea, with accounts, rules, schedules and reports, and you host it yourself. Check that the workflows you rely on exist before moving. This page makes no claim about importing YNAB data.

How much RAM does Actual Budget need?

The template declares a minimum of 512 MB RAM, 1 vCPU and 2 GB disk as an installation floor. This page sells the 6 GB tier, which sits well above that; larger histories, imports and many synced clients may want more disk and memory.

Where is the Actual Budget data stored?

On the actual_data volume mounted at /data, which holds the hashed server password, the budget-file registry and the synchronised budget files. Take a backup of that whole volume, export each budget from More, Settings, Export data, and test a restore before relying on it.

Does Actual Budget need HTTPS?

On xCloud it is served over HTTPS by nginx with a free SSL certificate on your domain. The container listens on port 5006 and is bound to localhost only, so it is reachable through that HTTPS entry point rather than directly from the internet.

Does Actual Budget sync with my bank automatically?

Only if you set it up. GoCardless and SimpleFIN are optional integrations that need your own provider credentials, stored in the actual_data volume and not covered by end-to-end encryption. Availability and pricing belong to the provider, not xCloud.

Does Actual Budget support multiple devices?

Yes. Actual is a local-first app with a sync server, and this template runs that server, so each device can sync a budget through your domain. It uses one server password by default rather than separate user accounts.

Does xCloud know my Actual Budget password?

No. You choose the server password on first visit and the template does not generate, display or keep one, so it cannot be recovered. Open the URL and set it immediately: until you do, anyone who reaches the setup screen could claim the instance.

Is this Actual Budget cloud hosting?

It is hosting you rent and own: a dedicated Cloud VPS running the open-source server, not an account on a service run by the Actual project. xCloud is not affiliated with or endorsed by Actual Budget. You keep the data and set the password.

Does xCloud upgrade Actual Budget for me?

No. The image is pinned by tag and digest, so existing installs are not upgraded automatically. A newer release arrives as a newer template version; back up the whole actual_data volume and export your budgets before any intentional upgrade.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
