What is Beets?

Beets is an open-source media library management system for music collections. Its purpose, in upstream's words, is to get your music collection right once and for all: it catalogs your collection, automatically improving its metadata as it goes, then provides tools for manipulating and accessing it.

On xCloud the command-line tagger and the web plugin run together on your own server. You import over SSH, and the web interface lets you browse and search what was imported. Because Beets has no sign-in of its own, the template places a password-protected gateway in front of the whole site.

A Beets setup normally means a container, a way to protect a web interface that has no login, volumes for the library, a domain and a certificate before the first import. This is the same result without assembling any of it.

One click. We bring up the pinned LinuxServer Beets image with the beets_config, beets_music and beets_downloads volumes mounted, put a Caddy authentication gateway in front of it, and publish the gateway over HTTPS on your domain. Beets itself is not published on the host.

Import Your First Music
Save the password from the protected credentials card and sign in at your HTTPS URL. The library starts empty: copy audio files into the downloads volume, SSH to the server and run beet import /downloads. Imported files are copied into the music volume and appear in the web interface.

Beets catalogs your collection and improves its metadata as it imports; upstream gets metadata from MusicBrainz, Discogs and Beatport, or can guess it from filenames or acoustic fingerprints.

Read-Only Web Interface By Default
The web interface is read-only out of the box, so a signed-in visitor cannot edit or delete library entries. Setting web.readonly to no in config.yaml changes that.
Import Over SSH
Import runs from the command line with beet import /downloads, copying organized files into the music volume. Upstream plugins add album art, lyrics, genres, ReplayGain levels and duplicate checks.
Persistent Library Storage
Settings, the library database and log live on beets_config, organized music on beets_music and incoming files on beets_downloads, and survive an xCloud Restart.

Why is there a password prompt?

Beets has no sign-in of its own, so the template protects the whole site, including the JSON API, with HTTP Basic Authentication. Your browser asks for the username and the generated password shown on the credentials card.

Can I import music from the browser?

No. Import runs from the command line over SSH: copy audio files into the downloads volume, then run beet import /downloads. The web interface browses and searches.

Add SSH keys in xCloud

Can I play tracks in the browser?

Not in 2.14.1. The web interface's audio play and download button returns an error because of an upstream web plugin issue (beetbox/beets#7015). Browsing, search and metadata work, and the files themselves are intact in the music volume.

Can a signed-in visitor edit or delete my library?

Not by default. The web interface is read-only (web.readonly in config.yaml). Setting it to no lets anyone with the gateway password edit or delete library entries.

Where do my settings live?

Beets reads /config/config.yaml inside the beets_config volume. The default file is written once on first start; later edits live in the volume and survive redeploys.

How do I change the password?

Rotate ADMIN_PASSWORD in the Environment editor and restart; the gateway applies the username and password on every start.

What survives a restart?

Your settings, library database, organized music and incoming files, because all three are persistent named volumes.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update Beets?

No. The template pins Beets 2.14.1 and the gateway by immutable digest; new installations use the pinned release and existing sites are not automatically upgraded. Back up first, read the upstream release notes, then bump the readable tag and digest together on your own schedule. Server-level backups and snapshots are available on every Cloud VPS.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template's baseline asks for 1 CPU core, 256 MB of RAM and 5 GB of disk; measured idle use in QA was about 62 MiB. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, which leaves room for a large library and for imports.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Beets?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Beets project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Beets project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
