What is Opengist?

Opengist is a self-hosted pastebin powered by Git. Upstream stores all snippets in Git repositories that you can read and change with standard Git commands or in the web interface, much like GitHub Gist but open source. It offers public, unlisted and private snippets, syntax highlighting, search, topics, likes and forks, embedding, and OAuth2 login. Self-hosted Opengist is AGPL-3.0 software written in Go.

Can you self-host Opengist with Docker?

Yes, upstream publishes a Docker image and a Compose example, and this template is Opengist Docker hosting without the setup: the 1.15.1 image pinned by digest, a generated session secret, one opengist_data volume and HTTPS on your domain, so you run your own Opengist cloud without a compose file.

How much RAM does Opengist need?

The template manifest asks for 512 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 2 GB of disk as its floor, because Opengist is one small container. The 6 GB plan is the entry rung, leaving room for a growing set of gists, their Git history and the search index.

Is Opengist free?

Yes. Opengist is open source under the GNU Affero General Public License v3, with no licence fee. The bill is the Cloud VPS that hosts it, cancellable whenever you like. Snippets stay in Git repositories on your own volume.

Is Opengist an alternative to GitHub Gist?

Yes, over HTTPS. This template turns off Opengist's optional built-in SSH Git service and never publishes port 2222, so SSH cloning is not available here. Use an HTTPS remote with the standard clone, pull and push commands.

How do I sign in to Opengist as administrator?

Register the first account on your HTTPS address; upstream makes that first account the administrator. xCloud does not generate or show an admin password for it, so choose a strong password yourself and register straight after deployment, before anyone else can.

How do I disable signup in Opengist?

After registering your own account, open Admin, then Configuration, inside Opengist and disable further signup. Until you do, anyone who can reach the domain can create an account. Do it straight away if the instance is meant for a closed team.

Does Opengist support OAuth or OpenID Connect?

Upstream supports OAuth2 login with GitHub, GitLab and Gitea, plus OpenID Connect. This template preconfigures none of them, so add complete provider settings in the Environment editor yourself and redeploy if you want single sign-on for your team.

Can I rotate the Opengist session secret key?

Keep OPENGIST_SECRET_KEY stable, because it protects sessions and MFA data. If you must rotate it, back up opengist_data and stop application traffic first; after the redeploy, existing sessions are invalidated and users with MFA may need recovery.

How do I back up Opengist?

Back up the opengist_data volume as one unit. It holds the SQLite database, every Git repository, the configuration, logs and the search index together. Stop the app, or stop writes, before copying so the files are consistent, and test a restore once.

How do I upgrade Opengist?

Opengist stays on pinned 1.15.1 until a newer template version replaces it. Skim upstream's changelog, back up opengist_data, then redeploy; the volume carries your gists, users and search index over. Nothing upgrades itself on an existing site, and a catalogue re-sync only affects new installs.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
