What is DSpace?

DSpace is an open-source repository platform used to provide durable access to digital resources. Upstream describes it as a turnkey repository application used by more than 2,000 organizations and institutions worldwide.

It consists of a Java-based backend, which provides a REST API along with other machine-based interfaces such as OAI-PMH and SWORD, and an Angular-based web interface built on that API. It needs a PostgreSQL database and a Solr search server, both of which this template runs privately next to it.

How do I sign in?

Use the administrator email you entered at install and the password on the credentials card.

Why are there two domains?

The browser loads the web interface from one domain and calls the REST API on the other, so both must be mapped before the interface can load data. The API domain has no page of its own; its API lives under /server.

Which domain should I choose carefully?

The web interface domain. DSpace writes persistent item links with that address when an item is archived, so changing it later leaves stored links pointing at the old address. The REST API domain can be changed later on the Domain page.

What runs alongside DSpace?

A PostgreSQL 15 database and a Solr search server, both private with no published ports.

Can visitors register?

Not by default; administrators create accounts. Registration can be enabled in the Environment editor, and it needs SMTP settings because the confirmation mail depends on them.

Is the repository public by default?

Visitors can browse, search and download everything marked public, and the API answers read requests without login. Sign-in protects administration and restricted items.

How large can an upload be?

Files up to 512 MB can be uploaded through the browser. Behind the Cloudflare proxy a single request is limited to about 100 MB, so larger files fail there; use a DNS-only record for the API domain if you need them.

How long does the first start take?

About 3 to 6 minutes: the first boot creates the database, builds the search indexes and starts the Java backend, the search server and the web interface. The page may show a bad gateway error until then.

Does DSpace send email?

Not until SMTP is configured. Uncomment the mail settings in the Environment editor, fill them in and redeploy.

What should I back up?

The assetstore (uploaded files), pgdata (database) and solr_data (search indexes) volumes. The template provides no backups of its own, so these volumes are the only copy of your files, records and search statistics.

What survives a restart?

Items, files and search indexes sit on persistent named volumes. In QA an item was still searchable and downloadable byte-identical after an xCloud Restart.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update DSpace?

No. The template pins DSpace 10.1 and its services by immutable digest; existing sites are not automatically upgraded. Back up first, read the upstream release notes, then bump the image tags and digests together on your own schedule. Server-level backups and snapshots are available on every Cloud VPS.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template's baseline asks for 2 CPU cores, 3072 MB of RAM and 20 GB of disk; measured use in QA was about 1.9 GiB across the four services. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, with real headroom above that baseline.

Is xCloud officially partnered with DSpace?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the DSpace project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source DSpace project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
