What is Gitea?

Gitea is an open-source, all-in-one software development service written in Go and released under the MIT licence. Self-hosted Gitea gives a team a self-hosted Git server with code review, issue tracking, project kanban, a wiki, a package registry and CI/CD that can reuse GitHub Actions workflows. Teams run it instead of GitHub when the code and the people with access to it should sit on a server they control.

What is Gitea used for?

Gitea is used to host Git repositories and run the work around them: code review through pull requests, issue tracking, project kanban boards, a wiki and a package registry. Teams run it on their own server so source code stays under their control instead of on a third-party host.

How much RAM does Gitea need?

Gitea's manifest floor: 1 CPU core, 1024 MB of RAM and 4 GB of disk. The 6 GB Cloud VPS on this page leaves wide margin over the Git server's floor. Repository count, Git LFS objects, package data and the number of users are what grow the requirement from there.

Can you self-host Gitea with Docker?

Yes, and Gitea Docker hosting is what this template does. Upstream publishes the gitea/gitea image; xCloud runs it pinned at 1.27.3 as a OneClick app, with the domain, HTTPS certificate and first administrator set up for you instead of a Compose file you maintain.

Does Gitea support SSH cloning?

Not in this template. The built-in SSH server is disabled in this first release, so the web interface and Git over HTTPS are what work. Clone and push over https:// using your account password or a personal access token created under Settings, Applications.

Does Gitea have CI/CD?

Gitea includes Actions, which uses workflow files compatible with GitHub Actions syntax. Jobs run on separate runners, and this template does not bundle one. You would need to provide runner infrastructure yourself and register it before any workflow can run on this instance.

What is the difference between Gitea and Forgejo?

Both are self-hosted Git forges, and each has its own xCloud template. The Forgejo template runs Forgejo with a PostgreSQL database and is licensed GPL-3.0-or-later; this Gitea template runs SQLite on a named volume and is MIT-licensed. Compare their feature lists against your own requirements.

Is Gitea free for self-hosting?

Yes. The open-source edition is released under the MIT licence, so no Gitea licence fee applies. The xCloud charge pays for the Cloud VPS and the deployment, and has nothing to do with upstream's separate Gitea Cloud service.

Is Gitea a GitHub replacement?

For many team workflows it covers the same ground: repositories, pull requests, issues, packages and Actions-style workflows. This template has no SSH cloning and no bundled runner, so check those against your own requirements before moving everything off GitHub.

What should I back up on a Gitea server?

Back up the gitea_data volume. It holds the SQLite database, repositories, LFS objects, packages, attachments and app.ini with the generated secrets. A cold backup with the container stopped is the safest route, and a restore is worth testing before you rely on the copy.

How do I upgrade Gitea on xCloud?

Nothing upgrades Gitea by itself: the container is pinned to gitea/gitea:1.27.3, so existing installs stay on the version they were deployed with, until you adopt a newer template. Back up the gitea_data volume first, then move to a newer template version on your own schedule.

Is xCloud the same as Gitea Cloud?

No. Gitea Cloud is a hosted offering that upstream's README points to. xCloud sells a Cloud VPS and deploys the open-source Gitea image on it, so the repositories sit on your server. xCloud has no partnership with, or endorsement from, the Gitea project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
