What is Forgejo?

Forgejo is a Git forge written in Go and distributed under the GPL-3.0-or-later licence. Upstream describes it as lightweight, with issues, pull requests, wikis and kanban boards, releases, a package registry for Docker, npm and other managers, organisations with team permissions, LDAP and OAuth. Self-hosted Forgejo is the option for teams that would otherwise keep code on GitHub or GitLab. Upstream says it was created in 2022 so an independent community would own the project.

Repositories, LFS objects, packages and configuration sit on forgejo_data, and the database sits on forgejo_db. Is Forgejo free?

What is the difference between Forgejo and Gitea?

Can you self-host Forgejo with Docker?

How do I back up Forgejo?

How do I upgrade Forgejo?

Forgejo 16.0.3 and PostgreSQL 17.6 are pinned by digest, so nothing changes until you choose. Read the Forgejo release notes and PostgreSQL compatibility, back up both volumes, then move to a newer template version. Verify sign-in, repository access and a Git push afterwards.

Does Forgejo have CI/CD?

Forgejo supports CI integration, but this template bundles no runner. Forgejo Actions runners are separate infrastructure that you provide and connect yourself, for example on another server. The template deploys the forge and its database only, so plan for the runner's CPU and memory separately.

Can I clone and push over SSH?

Yes, with two steps from you. The template publishes Forgejo's SSH server on a dedicated public TCP port, shown as host:port in the credentials. Add your public key in your Forgejo user settings, then open that port in the server firewall, since xCloud does not open it for you. HTTPS also works.

What are the Forgejo server requirements?

The template manifest asks for 1024 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 5 GB of disk as a floor. The 6 GB Cloud VPS sold here sits well above that floor; size the disk for how many repositories, LFS objects and packages you expect to store.

Can I run Forgejo in the cloud on xCloud?

Yes. For Forgejo cloud use, xCloud sets up a dedicated Cloud VPS, deploys the forge and PostgreSQL on it and attaches your domain and certificate. For a server you already rent from someone else, the self-managed option deploys the same Forgejo template onto it.

How do I create the first administrator?

No administrator is shipped and no password is generated for one. Open your HTTPS URL after install and complete Forgejo's built-in setup screen, which already has the database connection and public URL filled in, then create the first administrator with your own username, email and password.

Is public registration or email enabled?

Self-registration is disabled in the template, so people cannot sign themselves up. No SMTP is configured either, so email-dependent account flows need a complete mailer setup in Forgejo first. Check both settings before you invite anyone to the forge.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
