What is Isso?

Isso is a free, open-source, self-hosted commenting server — a JavaScript comment widget, Markdown comments, moderation and a built-in administration interface, without routing visitor discussions through a hosted comment platform. This template deploys version 0.14.0.

Is Isso free?

Yes — it is free and open source under the MIT License. What you pay xCloud for is the dedicated server it runs on and the management around it, not the application itself.

Can I self-host Isso?

Yes — that is exactly what this template deploys. It brings up the official Isso image, pinned by immutable digest, mounts its two persistent volumes and publishes it over HTTPS on your domain in minutes instead of assembled by hand.

Does this replace my blog or website?

No. This deployment is only the comment backend. Comments only appear once you add Isso's own client script and a thread element to your separate website — the exact HTTPS origin you entered at installation. Isso does not host or generate your site's pages.

What is the Website Origin field for?

It is the exact HTTPS origin of the website that will embed the comment widget — for example https://www.example.com — not the URL of this Isso installation. Isso uses it as its CORS allowlist, so comments only work from that one origin.

Can I embed Isso on more than one website?

Not with a single installation as configured here. WEBSITE_ORIGIN is one exact HTTPS origin, not a wildcard or a list — Isso rejects requests from any origin that doesn't match it.

How do I sign in as administrator?

Open /admin on your installed domain and sign in with the administrator password xCloud generated during installation. It is shown once as an installation credential.

How do I rotate the administrator password?

Update ADMIN_PASSWORD in xCloud's Environment editor and restart the application. Keep WEBSITE_ORIGIN unchanged unless you are intentionally moving Isso to comment on a different website.

What does xCloud configure automatically?

A generated administrator password, the public service endpoint for your domain, both persistent volumes, the domain and the HTTPS route. Isso's own container port stays private to the internal network — only the HTTPS proxy is published.

What should I back up?

isso_config and isso_db together, from the same maintenance window. The configuration volume holds the rendered server config; the database volume holds every comment and moderation decision. Quiesce comment writes, or use an SQLite-aware snapshot, for a consistent backup.

Backups in xCloud

Does xCloud automatically back up or update Isso?

No. The template pins Isso by immutable digest; a catalog re-sync affects new installations only. Review Isso release notes, take a coordinated backup of both volumes, then verify administration login and comment read-back before changing the pinned image.

What are the server requirements?

The template manifest asks for 512 MB of RAM, one CPU core and 4 GB of disk as a floor. This page sells the 6 GB tier, comfortable headroom above that floor — extra room a large comment history and its backups can use over time.

What survives a restart?

Everything on isso_config and isso_db, because both are persistent named volumes. Restarting the container does not touch your configuration, comments or moderation state.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Isso?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Isso project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Isso project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
