What is Isso?

Isso, short for the German phrase Ich schrei sonst, is a lightweight commenting server written in Python and JavaScript. Upstream aims for it to be a drop-in replacement for Disqus. Comments are written in Markdown, can sit in a moderation queue, and are stored in SQLite, with import from Disqus and WordPress. Run on your own server it is a self-hosted Isso, an alternative to a hosted comment service such as Disqus or Hyvor Talk, with the code under the MIT licence.

Can I run Isso in Docker?

Yes, and this template is Isso Docker hosting without the setup: the upstream Isso 0.14.0 image pinned by digest, with SQLite storage on two named volumes, a generated admin password and HTTPS on your own domain.

How much RAM does Isso need?

Plan on at least 512 MB of RAM, one CPU core and 4 GB of disk. A large comment history and database backups can need more storage. We start this page at the 6 GB tier, leaving ample headroom.

How do I add Isso comments to my website?

Add the upstream Isso client script and a thread element to the website whose origin you entered at install. Isso is a comment backend, not a blog, so nothing appears on your site until you do this yourself.

Yes. Isso is released under the MIT licence, so the software has no licence fee. The dedicated Cloud VPS storing your comments is the only charge, which makes it an Isso cloud of your own.

How do I back up Isso?

Back up isso_config and isso_db together. The database volume holds comments and moderation state and the config volume holds the rendered configuration. Quiesce writes or use an SQLite-aware snapshot. Nothing schedules this for you, so run it yourself and keep a copy off the server.

How do I upgrade Isso?

Your Isso stays on its pinned 0.14.0 image until you adopt a newer template version. Back up isso_config and isso_db first, then read the upstream release notes and configuration changes. Nothing upgrades itself, and a redeploy keeps both volumes.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
