What is Kavita?

Kavita is, in its README's words, a fast, feature rich, cross-platform reading server built to be a full solution for your reading needs, so you can share your collection with friends and family. It serves manga, webtoons and comics in formats such as cbr, cbz, zip and rar, plus books as epub and pdf, with responsive web readers, collections and reading lists, role-based user management with age restrictions and rich metadata filtering. Self-hosted Kavita is a reading server you run yourself instead of a hosted reader. It is licensed under GPL-3.0.

Through xCloud, the template starts Kavita 0.9.1, pinned by digest, as one container. Configuration, users and database state sit on kavita_config and your library files on kavita_media, mounted at /media. The first registered user becomes the administrator. Upload endpoints take files up to 30 MB, so put larger collections in the library volume and scan. Some metadata features belong to Kavita+, a separate offering.

Is Kavita free?

Yes. Kavita is open source under GPL-3.0, and the pinned v0.9.1.4 tag's licence file is linked here; if you distribute a changed copy, GPL-3.0 requires sharing its source. You pay xCloud for the server rather than the reader. Kavita+ is a separate offering that is not included.

Can you self-host Kavita with Docker?

Yes, and this Kavita Docker hosting template does it for you: the jvmilazz0/kavita image, pinned by digest, is one container on your own server, listening on container port 5000 behind HTTPS on your domain. This is not a Kavita cloud account, so your library and reading data stay with you.

How much RAM does Kavita need?

Minimum requirements for Kavita start at 1024 MB of RAM. Larger libraries need more memory during scans, and your files need their own disk space. The 6 GB tier on sale here has generous spare capacity.

What file formats does Kavita support?

How do I sign in to Kavita the first time?

Open the site and register the first account straight away. Kavita makes the first registered user the administrator, and the template provides no seeded administrator. Then add a library in Kavita and set its folder path to /media or a subdirectory beneath it.

Why does the Kavita administrator race matter?

Until an administrator exists, anyone who reaches the URL can register and take that role, gaining control of the library and users. Register your own account the moment the server is live, and then add users deliberately from the administrator settings.

Where do my books go in Kavita?

Into the kavita_media volume, mounted at /media. Copy your files there, add a library pointing at /media or a subfolder, and run a scan. Only add files you are entitled to use. Kavita's configuration and users sit separately on kavita_config.

How big can Kavita uploads be?

Kavita's raw-byte and base64 upload endpoints accept files up to 30 MB, which covers covers and small files. Place larger collections directly in the /media volume and import them through a library scan rather than relying on those endpoints.

How do I back up Kavita?

Back up kavita_config, which holds configuration, users, database state and generated signing data, and kavita_media, which holds your files, together. Stop Kavita before copying for a consistent backup, restore both to their original paths, and test a restore.

How do I upgrade Kavita?

Your 0.9.1 install keeps its pinned image through catalog updates, and adopting a newer template version is your call. Back up both volumes first and read the Kavita release notes. Then sign in, run a library scan and open a title.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
