What is KitchenOwl?

Self-hosted KitchenOwl is an AGPL-3.0 grocery list and recipe manager. Upstream describes a smart app where you add items before you shop, create recipes, plan meals and track household expenses. Lists sync in real time between several users, with partial offline support, and there are native mobile, web and desktop apps. It is the self-hosted counterpart to hosted apps such as AnyList and Mealime.

On xCloud the template runs the official KitchenOwl v0.7.10 all-in-one image as one container serving the web client and API. It stores its SQLite database and uploaded files on the kitchenowl_data volume, and the token-signing secret is generated once and must stay stable. Public registration is off. Upstream marks the project as public alpha, so expect things to change between releases.

Can KitchenOwl import recipes from a website?

Possibly, but this page makes no promise. The v0.7.10 README credits the recipe-scrapers library, used for scraping recipes from the web, without documenting the workflow. Check KitchenOwl's documentation for the pinned release and test importing on your instance before you rely on it.

What is the difference between KitchenOwl and Mealie?

There is no automatic update. KitchenOwl v0.7.10 stays pinned by tag and digest on an existing site, as catalog changes reach fresh installs alone. Back up the volume, read the release notes and migrations, change tag, digest and version together, and recreate the container. Never run docker compose down -v.

Is there a KitchenOwl cloud account I need?

No. Nothing here depends on a hosted KitchenOwl account. The server runs on your own Cloud VPS, your data sits on its kitchenowl_data volume, and the first account you create administers it. xCloud and the KitchenOwl project have no partnership.

What are the server requirements?

KitchenOwl declares a floor of half a gigabyte of RAM, one CPU core and 2 GB disk. Larger households, recipe images and retained backups need more storage and may need more memory, which the 6 GB tier sold here covers easily.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
